VCA Brookline Animal Hospital is a fast-paced, multi-doctor small animal practice in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Are you a veterinary medical professional looking to hone and expand your pharmacy skills? Look no further! VCA Brookline is looking for a Pharmacy and Inventory Technician. This is an excellent opportunity to utilize and focus your medical knowledge in a specialized area of the hospital. VCA Brookline Animal Hospital is located in the heart of Brookline, a mile from downtown Boston. We are a seven doctor, fast paced general medicine practice that also offers boarding and grooming services. Our hospital is equipped with five exam rooms; an in-house laboratory including Abaxis CBC and VetScan 2 diagnostic equipment; digital radiography; surgery suite and prep area; dedicated dental-procedure areas with digital radiography, high speed scaler and polisher; in house pharmacy including Hill's and Royal Canin prescription diets; and electronic medical record keeping.

Under the guidance and direction of the Hospital Manager, Medical Directors, and Technician Supervisor, the Pharmacy and Inventory Technician is primarily responsible for tasks relating to the filling and dispensing of all patient medications as well as the purchasing and inventory of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals (including controlled substances) and pet food and preventatives. Purchasing responsibilities include maintaining inventory, ordering, receiving and distributing supplies, all while being mindful of expenses. Additional duties may be added as necessary but will at least include assisting veterinary technicians with triaging phone calls and some floor work. Responsibilities must be performed while having an eye for detail and the ability to anticipate the supply needs for the hospital.

Minimum qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience in the veterinary industry

  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician or Experienced Veterinary Technician

  • Strong organizational ability and attention to detail

  • Must be able to develop and maintain effective and positive work relationships with other employees and representatives of private and public agencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience or training/education working in a pharmacy

  • Must be friendly, outgoing, “people oriented”

  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral

  • Telephone and computer skills

  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks at once and deal with high levels of stress in an environment of changing priorities

  • Intermediate math skills and excellent visual acuity sufficient for alphabetization

Physical Requirements

  • Dependable attendance is required

  • Any allergies to animals must be controlled through medication

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs

  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 40lbs, sit, walk, squat, bend, stand, reach, lift and type constantly during a minimum of 8 hours a day

  • Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions

  • Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand, give information in person and over the telephone

  • Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment such as syringes, laboratory equipment, computers, etc
