Brockton Hospital Nurse Manager - Med/Surg in Brockton, Massachusetts

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Vice President, Patient Care Services, plans, organizes, coordinates, supervises, directs and evaluates the delivery of all nursing care to patients in a nursing service area. Ensures quality patient care according to the departmental philosophy, policies, procedures and standards and fulfilling the mission of the hospital.

This is a full-time 40 hour/ week position
Responsibilities:
Participates in executing strategic initiates of the nursing division, on a unit level and on a departmental level as defined by the AVP on Nursing and the Chief Nursing Officer.
Acts as administrative and clinical resource to nursing staff on assigned unit
Supports and interprets hospital-wide and nursing –specific policies, procedures, standards, and goals.
Collaborates with the Staff Education Department in developing staff to enhance their professional and educational growth
Problem-solves and takes action independently.
Manages the hiring and firing decisions, in conjunction with Human Resources and is an active participant in the corrective action process.
Manages the annual evaluation process for staff as works with Staff education to assess their clinical competency.
Confers with on-call hospital and/or nursing administrator, as needed.
Manages results of customer satisfaction surveys and consistently makes an effort to increase customer satisfaction.
Initiates the investigation of patient, family, physician or staff complaints and, if necessary, directs the complaint to the appropriate department director or manager for follow-up.
Participates in Lean activities and problem sheet development.
Initiates the investigation of medication errors and incidents, utilizing lean methodology
Immediately reports major incidents to the AVP of Nursing or CNO
Assists the charge nurse in problem-solving, priority-setting, and staff reallocation, as necessary.
Follows guidelines set forth by nursing administration for the allocation of staff based on census levels, in assessing staffing needs on assigned shift.
Adjusts staffing levels based on clinical judgment, as appropriate.
Assures a safe environment for patients, families, visitors and staff.
Assesses the need for and approves all overtime of staff, on assigned shift.
Participates in hospital-wide and nursing department committees, task forces and groups.
Responds to all emergency situations within their clinical area, including all emergency code pages and rapid responses during assigned shift.
Provides department wide and/or unit-specific education in support of strategic initiatives and/or based on identified need.
Assures staff meet the core requirements of Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support courses.
Schedules appropriate clinical experience during orientation according to the individuals and/or unit’s needs.
Participates in credentialing processes for the nursing staff.
Maintains records of orientation and performance.
Serves as a resource and role model for associates. Promotes new concepts and trends in nursing.
Relates effectively with other members of management teams.
Promotes new concepts and trends in nursing.
Creates annual budget and staffing plans
Is responsible for monthly variance reporting
Maintains appropriate staffing during the scheduling process

BASIC KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/APTITUDE/EXPERIENCE:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables within established policies and protocols.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to assign and delegate duties in a clear and understandable manner.
Must be able to reasonably make appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies, and vendors.
Education/Experience/Licenses/Technical/Other:
I. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. B.S. in nursing required; M.S. in nursing or related field preferred.
II. Experience (Type & Length): T hree to five years clinical nursing experience required. Demonstrates clinical competence and evidence of leadership and management skills.
III. Certification/Licensure: Must be licensed to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Current BLS and ACLS is required. PALS, NRP, and TNCC recommended based on clinical area of practice.
