Signature Healthcare’s Brockton Hospital is hiring for a Full-Time Monday-Friday 10:30p-7a; 11p-7:30a Lead Clinical Laboratory Assistant in Brockton, MA.

Lead Clinical Laboratory Assistant Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform specimen processing, customer service and non-technical duties in the general laboratory.

  • Provide technical assistance to Clinical Laboratory Assistants, lesser experienced associates and/or students performing internships.

  • Assist with send-out testing and communicating with reference labs for requests for information, problem samples, and non-conforming events.

  • Assist with overall daily operations of the section, which includes bench assignment scheduling; ordering, stocking and managing supplies.

  • Assist the Manager with recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating staff performance.

  • Assist with evaluating workflows and help initiate changes to improve processing turnaround times.

  • Function independently within the scope of established department policies and procedures. Refers unusual problems or issues regarding unfamiliar situations, test procedures, or complaints requiring further attention to appropriate personnel. 

  • Review all orders to assure they comply with medical necessity guidelines and perform follow up as needed.

  • Assist with filling shift vacancies due to unscheduled absences by calling in or reassigning personnel as needed to ensure patient care is uninterrupted and quality is maintained.

  • Project an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times.

  • Work well with peers and those in authority; Promote positive patient and staff relationships and display pride in their work.

  • Comply with Hospital, Laboratory, Safety, CAP, OSHA, TJC, and HIPAA regulations.

  • Notify Manager or Safety Officer of hazards when found.

  • Communicate issues or significant events to both management and incoming shifts.

  • Register patients as required.

  • Order appropriate laboratory testing as requested by providers.

  • Receive specimens individually or by batch into the LIS.

  • Batch specimens to secondary locations as required.

  • Process specimens for both in-house and reference laboratory testing according to testing requirements.

  • Ensure specimens are collected, stored and processed according to testing requirements.

  • Cancel and request new samples when integrity is compromised.

  • Deliver specimens to appropriate area of the laboratory to ensure testing is performed in a timely manner.

  • Load specimens onto the laboratory track system as required, ensuring sample integrity throughout the process.

  • Perform add-on testing as requested ensuring appropriate specimen requirements are followed.

  • Ensure patient/specimen identity by confirmation of two identifiers throughout all steps of collection, aliquoting and processing of specimens.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of specimen priorities and the ability to prioritize appropriately.

  • Clarify all unclear orders prior to collection or processing.

  • Answer telephone according to Laboratory policy, take and relay messages accurately to the appropriate person.

  • Assist callers with questions or direct them to appropriate resource.

  • Fax patient results according to laboratory policy.

  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Effectively communicate information and instructions regarding tests and specimen collection to patients and/or family members, physicians, other healthcare providers in a respectful manner.

  • Assist with follow-up on events with patients and/or healthcare providers and document appropriately.

  • Complete annual training and competency assessments on or before the due date.

  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.

  • Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).

  • Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Experience with medical terminology, customer service, and patient registration.  At least 3 years of phlebotomy and processing experience required. 1 year of hospital laboratory based experience required.

  • PBT or CLA (ASCP) certification or equivalent experience.

  • Software/Hardware: Meditech, Lattice, Allscripts
