I. Position Function: Administers a variety of therapeutic procedures and agents utilized in the short and long term rehabilitation of inpatients (orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary, obstetrical, cardiac, medical, and surgical) referred by staff physicians, house officers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, courtesy staff physicians, podiatrists, dentists, osteopaths.
III. Authority: Has the authority to select and perform all aspects of treatment and patient care within the guidelines of the hospital, under state licensing regulations, and ethical standards of care adopted by the AOTA.
IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers, and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."
Notes Diagnosis of patient and takes all precautions for observing indications and contraindications; determines treatment to be administered.
Evaluates patient's emotional and physical condition; explains treatment to patient/family members/other; performs MMT and ROM/along with any other test needed.
Administers and/or instructs patients in specific treatments by the use of therapeutic exercises, supplies and instructs patients in the use of adaptive equipment used for bathing, dressing, feeding or handwriting.
Evaluates and treats patients with cardiac and respiratory problems or a potential for the same, as required, using various techniques and modalities as indicated; carries out instruction in energy conservation exercises, ADL training, teaching, and relaxation exercises.
Evaluates and treats for sensory motor and perceptual deficits.
Fabricates a variety of resting and dynamic splints, and adaptive equipment as requested by physician.
Evaluates patients during treatment to determine effectiveness and safety; reports to and recommends changes to physicians if indicated; discusses or clarifies order with referring physician; discusses problems with other staff members for input and ideas.
Instructs patients/families/others as indicated in treatment goals, home programs, and in-hospital self exercises.
Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatment; follows set guidelines for evaluation and record keeping.
Participates in rotation as available (i.e. inpatient, outpatients, hands, etc.).
Follows department policies and procedures; maintains a high level of safety for patients and property.
Assists, directs, and instructs ancillary and other personnel as necessary.
Studies current trends and new developments in occupational therapy by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, and participation in department in-services.
Participates in the training of occupational therapy students from AOTA accredited programs.
Participates in the CQI process through audits, peer review, and other Quality Council approved activities.
Maintains standards set down by the AOTA regarding treatment procedures and professional ethics.
Begins to develop knowledge based in the area of expertise, acting as a resource person and liaison between interdisciplinary staff and therapists, participating in multidisciplinary meetings.
Perform various other duties as assigned or as dictated by responsibilities.

Reports informally and formally to the Manager of Rehab Services regarding situations that require his/her attention.
Reports any deviation of normal operations the supervisor immediately.
Reports any unusual occurrences related to patients, other staff, self, or equipment to the Manager immediately.
Reports all incidents and breaches in the quality of care to the Manager of Rehab Services, as well as the Risk Management/Safety Department.
Reports to Primary Care Physician/Referring Physician, any changes in the patient's condition warranting intervention.
Shall be accountable for selecting and performing all aspects of patient care as delineated by license, and governed by state, federal and standard setting organizations.
Shall be accountable for maintaining the confidentiality and security of all hospital related, staff related, and patient related data and information.
Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital and department policies and procedures, including infection control.
Shall be accountable for patient care by non-licensed personnel while under their supervision.
Shall be accountable for proper patient identification by asking patient's name and checking ID bracelet.
Graduate of an AOTA accredited program.
Bachelor of Science Degree and/or certificate in Occupational Therapy.
Hand Therapy experience/CHT required to assist with OPD OT volume as needed Minimum of one year recent acute care experience preferred
Effective communication and educator skills.

Ability to manage within a flexible schedule.
Ability to work independently and possess sound decision making skills
Demonstrates beginning supervisory skills.
Massachusetts licensed or license eligible.
Current CPR certification.
