SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing, the Director of Respiratory Therapy will support the hospital's mission, values and philosophy. The Director of Respiratory Therapy will lead the team to meet objectives of the program, recommend developmental goals for the department and identify areas of growth for the service. The director of the department will develop, maintain and periodically update departmental Policies and Procedures. The director will assess department performance and quality of service in relation to established goals, policies and procedures. The director will recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to continually improve the department and the services provided to patients and families. Provide guidance, leadership and structure to the Respiratory Therapy team.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (include the following, but not limited to the following)

  1. Assures that all policies and procedures are carried out in accordance with professional standards of practice, accreditation standards, and license or regulatory requirements.

  2. Prepares new policies/procedures with clinical supervisor and approves changes to policies and/or procedures

  3. Develops departmental goals and objectives at least annually in conjunction with clinical supervisor. Reviews goals/objectives with staff quarterly.

  4. Oversees equipment purchasing and rentals on evaluation of need.

  5. Assures that patient equipment is checked by clinical engineering as required and in good working order.

  6. Identifies program needs, program planning and prepares any new policies and procedures, with the assistance of clinical supervisor.

  7. Ensures that regularly scheduled staff meetings occur. Provides input for agenda, and ensures that forum provides for all staff input.

  8. Monitors therapists' productivity with clinical supervisor, reviews staff assignments to assure effective coverage of patients and completion of designated tasks. Assumes increased patient load when necessary.

  9. Assures that patient records are current and in compliance with documentation standards

  10. As an active planner of patient care, attends and participates in team meetings, family meetings, medical meetings and discharge planning meetings.

  11. Directs the department's Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QA/PI) activities. Provides input and review of PI initiatives and assures staff participation.

  12. Attends and participates in assigned hospital, administrative and patient care committees and meetings in the absence of the clinical supervisor.

  13. Answers questions/concerns regarding respiratory care issues from patients, families and other health care providers

  14. Responsible for staff education in the set-up, monitoring, trouble shooting and change out of all respiratory equipment in partnership with the clinical supervisor

Education and Experience:

BA degree in science or related experience

Graduate of an AMA approved program in Respiratory Care.

Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

A minimum of 5 - 7 years experience in a pediatric setting with a minimum of 3 - 5 years leadership experience is required.
