Anesthesia Tech – $17.19/hr to 25.54/hr based on Collective Bargaining Agreement with 1199 SEIU

Shift Differentials – Evenings - $2.50, Nights - $5.00, Weekends - $2.45

I. Position Function:

The position of Anesthesia Tech within the Department of Surgical Services is based on the philosophy of Peri-operative standards developed by the AORN. The Anesthesia Tech works with the professional Anesthesia team by providing assistance in the peri-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of the patient’s experience. These activities are basesd on the theory that the care of the surgical patient is based on creative application of knowledge, skills, and interpersonal competencies. The ultimate goal of this position is to assist in the provision of quality individualized patient care in the surgical setting. The role of the Anesthesia Tech varies and may include but is not limited to:

  • Education of staff on anesthesia supplies, equipment and par levels

  • Maintenance of all anesthesia supplies including supply rotation

  • Efficient provision of resources

  • Advocacy, enforcement of standards, integration and coordination of services.

    II. Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists Anesthesia Personnel with intubations, extubations and the insertion of invasive monitoring lines

  • Assures all carts, stands, anesthesia machine and equipment are clean, well maintained and calibrated.

  • Assists with the prepartion of requested fluid set-ups as instructed by licenses health care professional.

  • Assembles and checks anesthesia supplies and equipment necessary for procedure.

  • Makes frequent rounds in the OR suites to assure rooms are well stocked.

  • Assist Anesthesia during emergencies and code blue procedures as instructed.

  • Assists with required standards for quarterly maintenance of anesthesia equipment as directed by Supervisor.

  • Strips, cleans and restocks carts, anesthesia machine drawers as required during turnover and at end of day.

  • Maintains IV solution/supplies per par levels in all peri-operative & procedure areas.

  • Disinfects and maintains all bronchoscopes used during intubations by following correct terminal cleaning procedures.

  • Changes soda lime canisters as needed; Assures that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly utilizing universal precautions.

  • Utilizes opportunities for teaching of team members.

  • Assures that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use.

  • Assist in surgical suite cleaning process to reduce turnover time when appropriate.

  • Assures immediate availability of the difficult airway cart. Validates contents daily to assure par stock levels are available.

  • Promotes that HANDWASHING, in particular, is the single most important technique to reduce cross-contamination.

  • Ensures disinfectants are used in proper concentration. Understands disinfectants must remain in contact with all surfaces for a specific period to allow penetration of all microbial cell walls and deactivation.

    III. Authority:

  • Many tasks require job knowledge or response to physician/patient needs, therefore, authority to respond to anesthesia staff needs within the framework of the technician responsibilities is given.

  • All information relative to job or duties are transmitted to senior/supervising staff in a timely manner.

    IV. Reporting Requirements:

  • Report potential impacts to patient safety to anesthesia staff, chief technician.

  • Notify appropriate staff of changes and events in surgical area that affect the regular

    O.R. scheduling.

  • Remove and report all malfunctioning equipment to chief / senior technician.

  • Acting in the best interest of the institution and the patients under it's care, employee will report any violation(s) to patient and fellow employee(s) safety and rights.

    V. Accountability:

  • Technicians are accountable to anesthesia staff, residents and supervising personnel to carry out all tasks assigned within the framework of there duties and communicate all essential information in a timely manner.

    VI Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Highly organized with attention to detail.

  • Capable of working independently.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Adaptable and able to respond quickly and adequately to constant change.

    VI. Qualifications:

    Minimum Education: High school graduate or equivalent; Current BLS Certification required. Graduate anesthesia technology program preferred.

    Minimum Experience: One year Anesthesia Tech experience in a multi-disciplined OR in an acute care hospital setting preferred or one year in a Critical Care or Stepdown unit as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

    Minimum skills/abilities: Strong follow-through and understanding of the principle of universal precautions. Strong mechanical skills required.

    Certification/Licensure: Current BLS Certification required.

    Special Qualifications: Anesthesia Technician Certification preferred.
