Boston Public Schools STIPEND OPPORTUNITY: February Acceleration Academy NURSE (SY22-23) in Boston, Massachusetts

Acceleration Academy Nurse position: February 20-23, 2023 REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing COMPENSATION: Stipend, $3000 Overview of Program: During February vacation week ( Week of Feb 20-23) selected BPS schools will have the opportunity to host Acceleration Academies for SY 2022-2023! The February Acceleration Academy will be focused on English Language Arts standards.The district-funded academies will allow students to participate in critical learning time based on targeted standards. The academic team has developed a schedule to allow for project based learning activities with embedded time for intensive specialized instruction based on each school's performance data. The Academics department is allocating funds to support Acceleration Academies to increase learning time and access to high-quality learning over the school vacation. The February Acceleration Academy will run for 4 days from February 20-23, 2023. The Academies are designed to accelerate student learning in small academically rich settings by leveraging engaging, standards-aligned lessons. Lessons build toward a project/problem-based performative task which provides students an opportunity to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text. Overview of Nurse Position: The Acceleration Academy Nurse will be part of the Acceleration Academy School Team. The Nurse will provide skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration during the February Acceleration Academy at the designated school site. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary, students are referred to their primary health care provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs, the school nurse may act as a liaison for the school, home, and outside medical facilities. The nurse will work with the Site Coordinator and teachers to develop or implement existing health plans to allow students to participate in all Acceleration Academy educational and enrichment activities. The school nurse will promote student wellness and assist in maintaining a healthy school environment during the Academy. RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide emergency medical care to students Assess, monitor, and support all students with symptoms of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases within the AA following established protocols for SY22/23 Monitor and report all positive case clusters of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases within the AA following established protocols for SY22/23 Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication to students; Counsel and/or educate students in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issues; Conducts formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develops accurate medical summaries on students; Develops and maintains contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation during the Acceleration Academy Week; Establishes and maintains appropriate record keeping and reporting formats and procedures Maintains adequate and updated health records Responsibilities Planning Review files on students attending Acceleration Academy Identify which students have ongoing medical needs and become familiar with the specifics of the medical condition Create medication distribution plan Have a planning session with the site coordinator prior to the start of the program Academy Week Be available for students during Academy hours, which will run five hours a day, 4 days a week, Provides emergency medical care to students Administer and/or supervise the administration of prescription medication to students Counsel and/or educate students in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issues Conduct formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develop accurate medical summaries on students; Develop and maintain contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation during the Acceleration Academy Week Establish and maintain appropriate record-keeping and reporting formats and procedures Maintain adequate and updated health records Collaboration and Evaluation Submit end of program deliverables Participate in mandatory feedback/debrief activities Schedule: Pre-Academy: Pre-planning with site coordinator The Acceleration Academy day will run for 5-6 hours. Nurses are required to be available during the Acceleration Academy hours (February 20-23, 2023). Program start and end times vary by school. Post-Academy: “Wrap-up” duties occur at the end of Academy programming. Qualifications: Currently employed as a Boston Public School nurse Bachelor of Science in Nursing Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse MA State Dept. of Education School Nurse License (All Levels) CPR & First Aid Certification Ability to meet the BPS Standards of Effective Practice as outlined above Experience working with children and adolescents in public school/agency/human services setting Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
