Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Staff Nurse - Occupational Health Services in Boston, Massachusetts

The Occupational health staff nurse's responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for workforce members of the DFCI population. The primary focus in on pre-placement health screenings, infectious disease screening and immunizations, TB and flu compliance programs and other occ health nursing services. They are a member of a multidisciplinary team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff at the Institute, BWH, and other collaborating institutions and agencies. The occupational health nurse identifies their own professional goals and learning needs. The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills and an understanding of the principles and practices of occupational health nursing. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to all workforce members

  2. Implements nursing process:

  3. Assesses patient needs.

  4. Analyzes assessment data to develop and support clinically accurate diagnoses.

  5. Plans care by establishing goals with measurable outcomes.

  6. Implements the plan of care.

  7. Evaluates the patient's response to interventions.

  8. Documents care according to Institute and regulatory agencies' requirements. 3.Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patients

  9. Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care, and makes appropriate referrals

  10. Complies with accepted standards of professional nursing practice, as well as with all licensure/registration requirements applicable to the nursing role.

  11. Establishes rapport with patients from a variety of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

  12. Interacts with patients and families in a caring and compassionate manner respecting the need for privacy and confidentiality.

  13. Develops approaches to problem solving which meet the individual needs of the patients and families.

  14. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care and support to the populations served.

  15. Fosters an environment that is sensitive to the needs of diverse populations, including but not limited to culture, ethnicity, gender, and age.

  16. Manages the environment of patient care.

  17. Monitors the environment of care with attention to patient safety, and assures compliance with regulatory agency standards

  18. Complies with Institute, Nursing and Patient Care Services, and unit policies, procedures, work rules and standards of conduct.

  19. Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (ANA, 2001) in all aspects of professional practice.

  20. Contributes to the formulation and achievement of goals on the unit, within the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services, and the Institute.

  21. Assists in defining goals and developing systems and work processes for the unit, the Division of Nursing and the Institute.

  22. Participates in unit, program-based, and divisional committees, councils, and initiatives.

  23. Demonstrates flexibility in setting and changing priorities. Accepts additional responsibilities as needed.

  24. Participates in QA/QI projects for the unit and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.Supports research activities within the unit, Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services, and the Institute.

  • Licensed as a registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • Baccalaureate degree required; baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred

  • Minimum of 2 year (or equivalent) of Occupational Health nursing experience

  • Certification in Occupational Health Nursing preferred - COHN.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrated skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and ability to make independent decisions.

  • Ability to function in a busy work setting with patients with complex needs.
