Amazon Software Development Manager, Core Search in Boston, Massachusetts

Description

We are seeking a Software Development Manager for the Search Engine team. The team plays a critical role in powering Amazon's product search capabilities, which is a core part of the Customer Experience.

As the Software Development Manager, you would be responsible for leading a team that designs, develops, and enhances the query serving and indexing components of this mission-critical search infrastructure.

The ideal candidate would have extensive experience leading high-performing teams building large-scale distributed systems, particularly in the areas of information retrieval, natural language processing, and machine learning. Strong technical depth, product sense, and people management skills are critical for success in this role.

Key job responsibilities

  • Manage a team of talented Software Engineers to architect, implement, and maintain the complex systems that power Amazon's product search. Foster a culture of innovation, excellence, and customer-obsession within the engineering team.

  • Collaborate with Principal Engineers and data scientists to build a roadmap of features to support search and discovery needs of Amazon customers.

  • Partner cross-functionally with other teams to provide a best-in-class production environment for semantic search experimentation and operation.

  • Oversee the development and iteration of the Lucene-based Search Engine that supports both lexical and semantic search capabilities.

  • Ensure that the search platform can handle high throughput and strict latency requirements to deliver a fast and responsive shopping experience.

  • Drive process improvements, setting technical direction, and making strategic decisions to evolve the Lucene-based search infrastructure.

A day in the life

A day in the life of the Search Engine Software Development Manager involves close collaboration across multiple teams and locations to continuously enhance the platform. This includes:

Global Coordination:

Partnering with engineering teams in Palo Alto, Dublin, and Tokyo to align on roadmaps, share learnings, and tackle cross-team dependencies.

Interfacing with science partners across different organizations to incorporate the latest advancements in areas like natural language processing and approximate nearest neighbor search.

Team Leadership:

Fostering a culture of innovation by brainstorming with the local team on new ideas and bottom-up improvements for the Lucene KNN platform.

Contributing to whiteboarding sessions and helping the team shape promising concepts to be reviewed with Principal Engineers. Providing technical and strategic guidance to the team as they architect, implement, and maintain the complex search systems.

Cross-Functional Alignment:

Working closely with key stakeholders across the broader Search stack to understand dependencies, remove blockers, and contribute to joint goals.

Advocating for the team's priorities and ensuring the Lucene platform seamlessly integrates with the end-to-end search experience.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

  • Bachelor's degree
