Boston University’s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory (NEIDL) is a state-of-the-art high and maximum containment research facility in New England focused on understanding pathogens cause disease and is dedicated to developing diagnostics, vaccines and treatments to combat emerging and re-emerging disease threats. The Senior Research Veterinarian has an essential role supporting the broader mission of Boston University Animal Science Center’s mission and will serve as a dedicated resource responsible to direct and oversee the ABSL-2, ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 research work at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL). The incumbent will be responsible for a) providing direction to technical staff involved in daily care and clinical oversight/support for research animals, b) assisting investigators to develop and optimize both surgical and non-surgical animal models, c) advising and mentoring staff in their professional development, d) participating in disease diagnosis and experimentation in ABSL-2/3/4 research areas at NEIDL and finally, e) training staff to gain access and work in biocontainment. This position reports to the Attending Veterinarian and Director of the Laboratory Animal Science Center (ASC). The individual is expected to provide some weekend on-call veterinary clinical coverage to the research animals at Boston University.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
Oversee a small team of up to four or five staff
Contribute to the strategic planning, ensure effective utilization of NEIDL resources, and, provide fiscal oversight and management of the animal research staff team and their operations
Monitor compliance of animal care with applicable institutional policies and SOPs
Participate in IBC and IACUC oversight activities
Oversee CDC and NIH audits
Advise researchers, IACUC members and staff in ensuring that the research activities comply with federal, state and local regulatory policies that are relevant to animal care and welfare.
Required Skills
Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification with post-graduate work experience at a ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent
Licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the US
Must be ACLAM Diplomate or be ACLAM boards-eligible
Require knowledge and hands-on experience (2+ years) in animal models of infectious diseases at ABSL-2, -3 and/or -4 levels
Preference will be given to those experienced in animal handling, dosing, sampling and capturing physiological/clinical pathology data measurements and in necropsy of research animals in a bio-containment facility.
Lab animal surgical expertise and research study execution skills are highly desirable.
Require multi-tasking and ability to work synergistically with other key stakeholders including EHS, Facilities, ROHP, Security and Investigators etc.,
Must meet requirements and qualifications to assume delegated program responsibility in NEIDL
Must meet requirements and qualifications for the Personnel Suitability and Reliability Program including DOJ/FBI background checks and SRA clearance in order to handle select agents and work in the biocontainment environment.
Manage duties outside of NEIDL biocontainment as assigned such as weekend duty rotation. Participate in ASC managerial and strategic initiatives as led by ASC Director.
