State of Massachusetts Senior BioWatch Technician in Boston, Massachusetts

The Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory at the Department of Public Health (DPH) offers an exciting opportunity for an individual with a strong laboratory and quality assurance background to coordinate a team that performs molecular diagnostic assays to detect the presence of biological agents and other infectious diseases in environmental samples. Testing is highly-detailed and requires that incoming specimens are recorded, processed, and triaged appropriately while maintaining chain-of-custody associated with the specimens. Staff is trained to work in both biosafety level 2 and 3 environments and may cross-train to provide surge testing for other laboratories. Additional duties include staff training, ensuring quality control, proficiency testing, equipment maintenance, inventory control, and disposal of hazardous waste. The Microbiologist may provide laboratory support for field responses and investigations as assigned by the supervisor. Please Note: The rotating work schedule will include weekends and holidays. The incumbent assures adequate laboratory staff coverage for operations 365 days throughout the year. Occasional overtime includes approximately six evenings a year to meet operational needs and respond to precautionary safety measures, and emergencies. _Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Performs analysis and determine the validity of molecular test results for this laboratory within the division. * Assures that incoming specimens are recorded, processed and triaged appropriately while maintaining chain-of-custody for the specimens. * Performs PCR-based or sequence-based molecular assays to detect the presence of biological agents and other infectious diseases. * Maintains documentation on findings and follows strict protocols for entering and reporting test results within the laboratory information systems. * Observes safety precautions and practices. Performs sample archival process including interfacing with other agencies. * Provides backup to ensure adequate laboratory inventory and maintenance of 3 months of laboratory supplies. * Maintains proficiency in aseptic methods and molecular diagnostics methods within either biosafety level 2 or biosafety level 3 environments. * Must ensure adequate laboratory staff coverage for daily operations. * Participates in generating testing and surveillance summaries and prepares QA/QC reports for this laboratory. * Supervises and trains laboratory personnel and others in laboratory procedures and safety protocols. * Follows the laboratory established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of performance and documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. * Provides technical support to other labs as needed. * Provides laboratory support for field responses and investigations as assigned by the supervisor. * Complies with all safety and security protocols. * Participates/contributes to LIMS implementation and processes associated with building renovation. _Required Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of the concepts and theories of microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology. * Knowledge of basic microbiological, immunological, and molecular biology techniques. These include knowledge of basic microbial culture techniques, biochemical tests, serology, sequencing, and nucleic acid-based detection assays. * Knowledge of the principles and policies governing professional ethics and rules of conduct. * Knowledge of the laboratory certifications and accreditations to ensure adherence to certification and accreditation requirements to meet regulatory requirements. * Ability to coordinate assignments for microbiological sample storage, handling, and specimen retention, and packaging and shipping of infectious substances. * Ability to explain, understand and apply the procedures, guidelines, policies, laws, rules and regulations governing agency operations. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of the analysis protocol and quality assurance in a laboratory. * Experience training and supervising personnel. * Strong laboratory and quality assurance background. _About the Department of Public Health:_ The mission of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is to prevent illness, injury, and premature death, to assure access to high quality public health and health care services, and to promote wellness and health equity for all people in the Commonwealth. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have (A) at least five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or academic research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field, of which (B) at least one (1) year must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity, or (C), any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing. Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology or medical laboratory technology, or related scientific field, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience. II. A Master’s degree with a major in microbiology, molecular microbiology, biology or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience. III.
