Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Research Technician - Letai Lab in Boston, Massachusetts

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and creative researcher to assist in the development and clinical testing of novel methods to guide cancer therapy in the Letai lab at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The Letai lab is a translational medicine laboratory with a strong emphasis on functional precision medicine and improving patient therapy. The Research Technician will have the unique opportunity to support clinical testing that will influence patient care, as well as participate in the research and design of even better methods and biomarkers.

The positions in this job family will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity. In general, they will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks a Full-Time Research Technician to work in Dr. Anthony Letai’s laboratory under the Department of Medical Oncology. We seek an experienced and motivated research technician to assist with studies of molecular mechanisms controlling induction of cellular senescence following sub-lethal cytotoxic stresses using several models of cancer. Primary responsibilities will include routine maintenance of mammalian cell cultures in sterile conditions for screening. The person in this position may also prepare DNA, RNA, or protein samples from these cultures for routine molecular biology assays, as well as execute high-throughput cellular function and drug sensitivity experiments. In general, this position will assist in the set-up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results. In addition, the Research Technician will collaborate with a diverse array of community members at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School to advance and enrich her/his educational experience. There is potential for contributions to be published and presented in several forums. The qualified candidate will be motivated and hard-working, and good at collaborating with others in a team environment. Prior occupants of this position have gone on to medical school and graduate school. We are seeking candidates with at least two years of availability.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in molecular and cellular biology experiments, including but not limited to: molecular cloning, mammalian cell (tissue) culture, transfection and infection of cells with expression vectors.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all experiments.

  • Maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner.

  • Ability to identify potential problems, and to communicate and troubleshoot them effectively.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to thoroughly document experiments, protocols, and data. Must be able to logically structure tasks and set priorities.

  • Attention to accuracy, attention to detail, and raising questions promptly with Investigators about matters affecting data quality.

  • Ability to independently follow protocols and troubleshoot procedures as required.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks

  • Time management – meets deadlines, balances multiple projects at all times.

  • Communication – professional, courteous, and accurate communication of progress and results to a supervisor and principal investigator. Ability to communicate effectively with collaborating clinicians and scientists.

  • Documentation – ability to provide thorough written and/or electronic documentation of protocols, weekly project status reports, and regular review with principal investigators

  • Ability to work independently and to function as part of a team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a major in Biology or Chemistry preferred

  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.

  • Experience with molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, and flow cytometry is desirable.

  • Knowledge of information and techniques related to either biology, chemistry, or medicine is preferred.

  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.

  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.

  • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.

  • Ability to work within a team environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required:
