A molecular genetics and immunology laboratory is seeking a highly motivated individual for a research technician position. The lab is focused on studying the molecular mechanisms involved in V(D)J recombination, Class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation in developing and/or activated B lymphocytes, as well as using knowledge gained from these studies for developing mouse models to test HIV1, and other types of, vaccine development. Research technicians will perform a wide range of molecular biology, cell culture, immunological, and possibly animal-based techniques. Research technicians routinely have the opportunity to serve as co-authors on publications that include their work. Previous research experience is highly desirable. Successful applicants are expected to make at least a two-year commitment.
This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:
Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of routine and specialized laboratory experimental, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research. Assists in the use of specialized laboratory equipment and analysis of data generated by this equipment
According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, performs a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy.
Assists in troubleshooting procedures if experimental results are unexpected or quality of specimens is poor.
Performs the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:
Maintains records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.
Maintains equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner.
Sterilize and clean glassware, prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
Inventories supplies alerts supervisor to needed supplies, or mixes standard reagents.
Processes order for supplies and/or animals. Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials.
Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.
Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
Attends courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.
Contributes to the team within and between departments and organizations.
To qualify, you must have:
BS in biology/biochemistry or a related field.
Strongly motivated, highly organized and willing to put in extra hours when required.
A minimum of two years of commitment is required.
Previous laboratory experience preferred, but not necessary.
Please note: During a public health emergency, individuals in this role may be expected to take on additional duties to respond to organizational needs.
