State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse III in Boston, Massachusetts

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is looking for a talented and motivated Registered Nurse.

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental health Center, (Fuller) 60 bed inpatient psychiatric facility provides comprehensive, information and timely forensic evaluations for individuals to determine pre-trial competency and or criminal responsibility. We also provide quality, integrated care to support an individual’s recovery process through ongoing psychiatric treatment and care.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  1. Accurately utilizes the nursing process as a tool to provide a high level of client care.

a. Completes admission assessment according to policy and procedure.

b. Develops initial treatment plan and participates in Treatment Planning on an ongoing basis.

c. Starts client discharge planning on admission.

d. Assumes responsibility for implementing and/or delegating client care to appropriate ancillary staff based on client need and staff capability.

  1. Directs and performs appropriate nursing care.

a. Demonstrates knowledge of Joint Commission’s Provision of Care, Treatment, and Services Standards, Medication Management Standards and CMS standards of care for Behavioral Health.

b. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing policies and procedures.

c. Works with Nurse Managers/Charge Nurse to create and maintain a therapeutic milieu.

d. Provides continuity of care by communicating with and participating in treatment planning meetings.

e. Makes appropriate decisions concerning clients, staff and milieu management in conjunction with charge nurse/nurse manager.

  1. Foster mutual sharing of information and maintains communication between health care team.

a. Communicates relevant information regarding clients for shift report.

b. Participates consistently in staff meetings and patient care rounds to assure continuity and consistency in management of client care.

c. Communicates information and changes in client status or milieu issues to charge nurse/nurse manager/supervisor, medical staff and other appropriate people.

  1. Develops and implements a plan for client/family teaching in the Aspects of Health Care that will promote health and wellbeing.

a. Demonstrates knowledge of 5 Rights of Medication Administration

b. Follows National Patient Safety Goals, policy and procedures of the SCFMHC and Joint Commission/CMS Standards related to medication administration, transcription of orders and documentation.

c. Emotional/Physical pain is assessed and PRN medication is administered according to policy and procedure of the SCFMHC, and standards for Joint Commission/CMS.

d. Narcotics and controlled drugs are counted at change of shift and/or a change in Licensed Staff.

e. Ensures that adequate supplies of medication are on the unit at all times.

  1. Provides leadership and direction to staff.

a. Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.

b. Reviews policies and procedures with staff of a lower grade.

c. Provides clinical supervision for staff and reviews their EPRS with them.

d. Provides opportunity for staff to express their ideas, gives feedback and provides guidance.

e. Serves as a role model by supporting hospital policy and procedures

f. Utilizes communication pathway to provide comprehensive clinical and administrative reports to staff.

g. Assumes responsibility of charge nurse in the absence of nurse of a higher grade.

h. Demonstrates the ability to direct, teach, delegate and supervise the outcome of that delegation.

i. Maintains professionalism in manner, relationship, and dress.

j. Sets example for staff with appropriate utilization of earned time and sick time by planning time off in advance.

k. Punctually reports to assigned shifts.

l. Accepts reassignments to other units when deemed necessary.

  1. Assumes responsibility for continuous personal and professional development.

a. Attends continuing education, gains CEU’s as mandated by state

b. Demonstrates knowledge of CARE and ability to implement strategies to de-escalate situations

c. CPR and AED Training is current

d. Participates in annual performance evaluation.

e. Participates in meetings and/or committees as deemed necessary.

f. Serves as a role model by supporting hospital policy.

  1. Maintains safe environment for clients which provide dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times.

a. Maintain a safe, comfortable environment for client/staff at all times.

b. Demonstrates knowledge of National Patient Safety Goals.

c. Follows hospital policies for precaution and infection control.

d. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures for fire drills, evacuation per hospital policy.

e. Responds appropriately in both medical and psychiatric emergencies.

f. Demonstrates skill in assessing and documenting care of patients in restraint and seclusion

g. Respect client confidentiality at all times.

Hours: 2:45pm to 11:15pm

Days off: Week 1 Monday and Saturday

Week 2 Sunday and Friday

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*

*Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
