The Clinical Nurse (NCR02) Urology role is a unique position which includes administrative tasks, clinical coordination and direct patient care.

The Clinical Nurse (NCR02) will assist in the coordination of clinical care and patient education activities at BIDMC Urology to ensure competent and efficient delivery of quality patient care. As part of the Urology clinical team, the CN will work collaboratively with physicians, nursing and administrative staff. The candidate will demonstrate effective communication, problem solving and strong clinical judgment. The CN will facilitate quality and safety improvement processes as directed.

You will also participate in direct nursing care as an active member of the Urology clinical team in the ambulatory setting.

The ideal candidate will have experience in adult ambulatory practice with multiple providers and clinical disciplines, a facility with EMR and is a collaborative team member.

The CN should be a highly motivated, ambitious nurse with strong communication skills who will work closely with the team to ensure competent, compassionate, individualized nursing care for all patients.

Department Specific Job Responsibilities- Education/Teaching:

Vaginal dilation – teaching post Vaginoplasty

Penile implant – inflation/deflation teaching

AUS teaching

Bladder retraining – coaching/education

Foley catheter placement for acute retention – teaching resource for Foley catheter care

Patient education pre/post procedure teaching/discharge instructions

SPT teaching

UDS

Fusion Biopsy

Transperineal Biopsy

Phone/Lab/Patient message triage

Procedures- Clinical Nurse will be responsible for several office based surgical procedures and testing:

Performing voiding trial studies

Assist physicians with Cystoscopy procedures

Prostate biopsy

Vasectomy and Circumcision

Urodynamic testing

Assisting Physician with prostate biopsy

Nursing Care:

Provides direct care to patients and makes necessary nursing judgments. Responsible for assessing the health care needs of individuals and implementation and evaluation of care plans.

Coordinates the care of patients and directs assistive personnel in order to provide safe, effective, efficient, equitable and timely patient-centered care. Demonstrates awareness of environmental forces on health care of patients and their families. Demonstrates the ability to identify resources necessary to implement the plan of care (essential)

Works in a collegial and collaborative relationship with other health professionals to determine healthcare needs of patients. Develops relationships with patients that maintain and communicate trust and respect. Communicates effectively in the exchange of information. Demonstrates the ability to act as a patient advocate (essential)

Maintains annual mandatory education requirements, which include emergency skills and unit based competencies. Identifies needs for continued growth and development in conjunction with the unit based educator or Clinical Nurse. Participates in activities that contribute to professional development of self. May participate in quality improvement activities (essential)

Additional Nursing Duties:

• Instillation of contrast for VCUG

• Collection of urethral swabs

• Continuously monitor acutely ill patients, monitor, assess and documentation of patient pre/post procedure status. Procedure related issues ie: monitor syncope during vasectomy

• Assist MD/NPs as needed during visits/procedures

• Medication administration/documentation, Medication Reconciliation

• Obtaining specimens from catheters, tubes, wounds and drains

• Placement of IV’s and IV fluids for post op Urology patients

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.

  • License Registered Nurse required.

  • American Heart Association - Basic Life Support Certification

  • 1-3 years related work experience required.

  • Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a teaching hospital and specialty area expertise

Age based Competencies:

Physical Nature of the Job:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
