About the Unit:
The Cardiothoracic ICU (CTU) is a 10 bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of the pre-and post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patient. Many patients are recovering from coronary artery bypass graft, valve surgery, heart transplant, ventricular assist device surgery, myectomy, aneurysm repair/replacement, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) as well as many other cardiothoracic surgeries performed at Tufts Medical Center. Our patients often require hemodynamic monitoring through a pulmonary artery catheter (PA catheter), vasoactive medications, ventilator support, and have epicardial pacing wires and chest tubes. Our patients can have intraortic balloon pumps (IABP), continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and other percutaneous VADs .
The talented team on the CTU thrives in an environment that is professional, collaborative and respectful, and shares a common goal of treating the whole patient and providing the highest level of patient centered care. Our team consists of approximately 50 registered nurses (RN), unit coordinators (UC), and clinical care technicians (CCT). The patients on the CTU are followed by a medical team comprised of attending surgeons, intensivists, fellows, and physician assistants. We also have experts from many different disciplines on our team – social work, case management, pharmacy, as well as many other integral departments within the Medical Center. The nurses at the bedside are experts in the care of these patients, and progress the patients along the continuum of care until they are ready to be transferred to the step down floor for continued recovery. The CTU staff embrace patient and family centered care every step of the way.
