Boston University Postdoctoral Associate, Boston University Medical Center, Hematology & Medical Oncology in Boston, Massachusetts
The Multiple Myeloma Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center is looking for a highly motivated Research Technician to conduct basic and translational research in the field of oncology. The Multiple Myeloma Research Laboratory is part of the Hematology and Medical Oncology section at the Boston University Medical Center and collaborates with other laboratories from the department as well as with other national and international centers.
The candidate must be a bench scientist with experience in biochemistry and molecular biology. The technician will be an integral member of the research team and will assist in performing scientific research, development and clinical tasks of varying complexity. Current projects include studies focusing on the molecular characterization of multiple myeloma and myeloma microenvironment utilizing primary samples and myeloma cell lines. The Research Assistant serves a major role in the flow of the laboratory’s research. The applicant must have good communication skills as interactions with other laboratories from the cancer center and with international laboratories will be critical. This position is junior but it offers scope for substantial professional development. We will provide specific training, and the incumbent will have opportunities to learn new skills, gain experience and author publications based on his/her work. This position is funded for one year initially, with the possibility for longer-term employment.
Previous lab experience is encouraged as the candidate will be expected to independently carry out essential research functions in the laboratory that include but are not limited to:
Cell culture
Western blot analysis (immuno-precipitations and immunoblotting),
RNA/DNA extractions, PCR and RT-PCR
Transient transfection and lentiviral transduction
Flow cytometry assays and experience with analysis (DIVA, FLOW-JO) is preferred.
Performing cytotoxicity and proliferation assays
Attention to detail, organization, professionalism and a willingness to learn new skills
Ability to work in a team and with some independence
Good communication skills including spoken and written English
Follows optimized protocols to process peripheral blood and bone marrow from patients with multiple myeloma on designated clinical trials and tissue banking protocols
Assists with various next-generation sequencing experiments using multiple myeloma cell lines and patient samples
Attends lab meetings and actively participates in communicating updates on sample intake for various protocols
Maintains accurate electronic and physical sample inventory
Required Skills
Bachelor's Degree required with a major in biology or immunology preferred.
Knowledge of information and techniques related to biology and immunology is preferred.
Good organizational and interpersonal skills and a working knowledge of data management, word processing, graphic software (Excel, MS Word, Graphpad/PRISM) is preferred.
Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
Basic mathematic skillset and ability to work within a team environment.
The position is expected to work full time (40 hours/week) for one year with option to extend position beyond this term.
Ability to work in a team and with some independence.
Good communication skills including spoken and written English. You will need to keep detailed records of everything that you do.
