- Tufts Medical Center is a level one trauma center and teaching hospital in the heart of Boston.
Under general supervision of the Patient Care Assistant Supervisor and operating room personnel, the Patient Care Assistant will engage in direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients having surgical procedures. With a focus on safety and efficiency, general responsibilities of this role include room turnover and set up, stock inventory, transporting patients to and from the procedural areas, and providing the operating rooms with required specialty equipment in preparation for all surgical procedures. This is an integral position in a dynamic and fast paced clinical setting with involvement in various surgical procedures that include an advanced cardiac surgery program.
Performs O.R. room turnover between cases. This includes cleaning the room by washing down equipment and stainless steel furniture, disposing of soiled trash and linen, collecting necessary supplies, and setting up specialized equipment/O.R. tables for next case.
Works with Central Processing and Supply Chain to ensure supplies and instrumentation are ready for assigned cases. As required, may retrieve case carts from CPD for subsequent cases.
Transports patients from surgical floors to OR suite, equipment and supplies to and from O.R. and works as a liaison with CPD to ensure delivery of kits and sterile items throughout the surgical case.
Assists the clinical care team within the operating room with patient positioning and preoperative skin preparation tasks.
Uses proper care for handling of wrapped/peel packed surgical instrumentation.
Demonstrates knowledge and use of specific tables, table accessories, and equipment.
Maintains room and specialty cart supplies at approved par levels.
Performs general tidiness of all procedural areas and maintains cleanliness of inner and outer core zones of the surgical suites
Assists in breaking down non-sterile supplies for the O.R. and transports them to designated areas
Transports blood products and specimen to and from their respective locations (i.e. Blood Bank, Mammography, Pathology, Cytology)
Adheres to JACHO and HIPAA regulations
Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment
Assists leadership team with strategic initiatives regarding process improvement efforts, with a focus on safety and efficiency
Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Must have the ability to take direction and follow through on assignments without reminder. Ability to prioritize assignments and tasks at hand. Must also be able to work in a fast paced, highly technical environment.
Must have demonstrated manual dexterity to perform duties as assigned. Must have knowledge of different patient positions to assist in O.R.
Must have demonstrated knowledge and use of universal precautions. Must have demonstrated knowledge of asepsis and sterile technique.
Read and write at a level necessary to perform all duties.
Accurately maintain written records in addition to basic familiarity with computers and the ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.
Must demonstrate a pro-active customer service orientation.
Must have the ability to be flexible with schedule and adhere to the operating room on-call policy
Requires 3 months of on-the-job training, 1 of which will be between the hours of 630am-3pm
High School Diploma or equivalent education required
Two years of experience working within an operating room setting preferred.
Two years of experience in a hospital setting required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
