Patient Care Assistant I

  • Under general supervision of an RN, performs direct and indirect perioperative tasks for patients having pediatric and adult surgical and endoscopic procedures. General responsibilities include room set up, stock inventory, and transporting patients, supplies and equipment. As a member of the O.R. Team, participates fully to ensure a smooth functioning O.R.


Performs O.R. room turnover between cases. This includes cleaning room by washing down equipment and furniture, getting necessary supplies for next case, and disposing of soiled trash and linen. Also makes up the O.R. table, fills suction containers and transports "old" case cart to CPD. Ensures supplies and instrumentation are ready for assigned cases. As required, may get case cart from CPD for next case.

Transports patients from surgical floors to OR suite. Transports equipment and supplies to and from O.R. and works as a liaison with CPD to ensure delivery of case carts.

Assists the RN in the patient holding area as needed. For example: holding patients in certain positions for blocks.

Uses proper care for handling and care of surgical instrumentation, uses the biological and flash monitoring systems and documents results on daily log.

Performs preoperative skin preparation tasks.

In the O.R. assists with patient positioning and use of specific tables and table accessories.

Maintains room and cart supplies at approved par levels. Checks carts and rooms weekly for outdated supplies.

Performs general picking up and maintains cleanliness of inner and outer core areas.

Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working groups achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment

Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.


Must have the ability to take direction and follow through on assignments without reminder. Ability to prioritize assignments. Must also be able to work in a fast paced, highly technical environment.

Must have demonstrated manual dexterity to perform duties as assigned. Must have knowledge of different patient positions to assist in O.R. and Holding area.

Must have demonstrated knowledge and use of universal precautions. Must have demonstrated knowledge of asepsis and sterile technique.

Level of knowledge and writing skills equivalent to high school level education.
