State of Massachusetts Occupational Therapist II in Boston, Massachusetts
The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center (DSCFMHC) of the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a compassionate, talented Occupational Therapist - II to become part of a cohesive rehab team and provide leadership to our occupational therapists! The DSCFMHC is a 60-bed inpatient psychiatric facility that also provides comprehensive and timely forensic evaluations for individuals to determine pre-trial competency and/ or criminal responsibility. We also provide quality, integrated care to support an individual’s recovery process through ongoing psychiatric treatment and care. As part of that psychiatric treatment and care, the Rehabilitation Dept. provides evidence-based rehabilitative interventions to support the recovery of those we serve. The incumbent of this Occupational Therapist – II position has the chance to provide quality occupational therapy services while providing leadership to our occupational therapists. The selected candidate will provide skilled occupational therapy interventions within group and individual settings using evidence-based approaches that address the individualized treatment goals of each person served. Duties also include active engagement in the initiative to minimize seclusion and restraint through sensory integration techniques and other therapeutic approaches as indicated. Teamwork and collaboration are essential and exercised daily when coordinating interventions and activities with professional colleagues within the department including recreational therapists, rehabilitation counselors and occupational therapy assistants. The selected candidate will receive regular support and supervision and will also be supported with identifying and engaging in continuing education to support enhancement of clinical skills. Level-I and Level-II Fieldwork student supervision is highly encouraged and offered regularly. The incumbent of this position will also play a key role in providing supervision and leadership to the facility occupational therapy staff which includes routine supervision and diligent review of work performance. _Duties and Responsibilities: (These duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):_ * Utilizes relevant occupational therapy evaluations, including OT Functional Assessment, to determine client’s current functional status, including occupational strengths and challenges, and goal(s) towards recovery. * Utilizes a person-centered and strengths-based approach when providing group and individual interventions. * Participates in initial and subsequent treatment planning. * Counsels patients and family when clinically indicated regarding rehab plan of care and progress towards goals as well as community integration interventions when applicable. * Provides training and supervision to occupational therapy students as assigned. * Reviews and approves occupational therapy treatment plans prepared by subordinates. * Provides training to subordinates to ensure delivery of services and compliance with agency policy and program. * Interviews candidates for employment and makes recommendations regarding hiring, promotion, etc. regarding agency staff. _Required Qualifications:_ * Knowledge of the treatment methods, techniques and procedures used in occupational therapy. * Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in providing occupational therapy. * Knowledge of the techniques and methods of diagnostic and prognostic testing relative to occupational therapy. * Ability to understand, explain and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. * Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of occupational therapy data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. * Ability to gather information through observing individuals. * Capacity to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/ or evaluations; determining subordinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Ability to administer specialty occupational therapy assessments, synthesize report of the findings and provide recommendations based off of the results as indicated. * Knowledge of group dynamics and group facilitation when providing activity-based and psycho-educational groups with adults exhibiting signs and symptoms of mental illness. * Ability to provide group and individual interventions while maintaining a harmonious and supportive environment. * Knowledge of and ability to write SMART goals and to develop rehab interventions to address goal. * Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency. * Experience and skills related to providing supervision to subordinates. _Special Requirements:_ * Possession of a current and valid Occupational Therapist License issued by the Board of Allied Health Professions. * Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required. _Working Conditions:_ * Occupational Therapists may work in psychiatric treatment settings with individuals living with emotional distress, mental health conditions and/ or intellectual disabilities as well as with people within the correctional system. * Occupational Therapists may also work out-of-doors exposed to changing weather conditions. * Occupational Therapists may need to travel for work related purposes. __ _Please Note:_ This position is 40 hours per week, weekday shift 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekend shift 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Days off are Saturday and Sunday. _Agency Mission:_ The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center is a 60-bed inpatient psychiatric facility that provides comprehensive and timely forensic evaluations for individuals to determine pre-trial competency and or criminal responsibility.
