Job Description:

CLINICAL LEADER: Advanced Practice Nurse-Hospitalist Program

JOB SUMMARY :

Responsible for the coordination of clinical and administrative activities for the New England Baptist Hospital Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Hospitalist Service. Provides mentorship and leadership to the APN staff of the Hospitalist Service. Oversees day-to-day operations including staffing, assignments and the delivery of appropriate, quality of care. Oversees new hire orientation and new graduate education and support. Liaison to hospital-wide services for updates and communication. Recommends changes that result in streamlining care in an effective, efficient and clinically appropriate practice. Continues to provide case load of patients.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES:

Clinical :

  1. Provides oversight of daily staffing and assignments

  2. Maintains standards, policies and procedures of the hospital.

  3. Consults with and supports clinical nurse practitioners in problem solving and decision making relative to patient care issues and provides appropriate guidance and feedback regarding outcomes.

  4. Daily rounding, full assessment of medical conditions, reviewing accuracy of medications, management or perioperative medical conditions, daily documentation, and coordination of discharge with case manager and attending physician

  5. Utilizes appropriate medical resources to ensure optimal patient care outcomes.

  6. Investigates patient care issues as requested by members of the health care team, patients, and families to work toward resolution. Relays pertinent information to higher management.

  7. Encourages and assists nurses to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with providers and other members of the health care team.

Administrative:

  1. Provides supplemental information to staff regarding the hospitalist NP role, updates staff to policy and practice changes, programs and provides appropriate support and materials to meet the needs of success within the NP role.

  2. Promotes utilization of continuing education opportunities. Provides mentorship and education for new hires and newly graduated nurse practitioners. Assists staff to identify educational needs and offers suggestions for educational programs or in-services.

  3. Manages nurse practitioner schedule and time off requests, coordinates with hospitalist MDs to ensure proper staffing. Analyzes and adjusts daily staffing to ensure appropriate staffing with NPs to inpatient units and appropriate staffing to meet needs of the inpatient census.

  4. Develops new hire schedule, oversees preceptorship of new staff, coordinates with education department to provide inclusive and comprehensive hospital orientation.

  5. Collaborates with other health team members to identify current and future needs of the Patient Care Services Department. Collaborates with members of other hospital wide services to meet hospital needs.

  6. Promotes and maintains communication with all services as well as within the Hospitalist Service.

  7. Coordinates NP led in-services for the nursing department, participates in journal club and M&M presentations.

  8. Increases professional development through continuing education.

  9. Participates in hospital committees, task forces and professional organizations.

  10. Assists in research studies/QI activities to further develop nursing strategies that improve patient outcomes.

  11. Establishes regular communication with Director of Hospitalist Service regarding arising issues and progress of the Hospitalist NP team.

  12. Maintains membership of standing and ad-hoc committees related to the Department of Medicine.

  13. Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Minimum Formal Education: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program. Master’s degree required. Doctorate preferred.

  2. Previous Experience: Four years recent acute care inpatient experience, two years of first line or middle management preferred.

  3. Demonstrates leadership abilities including problem solving, decision making and effective interpersonal skills.

  4. Willingness to support the philosophy of the Nursing Department, Department of Medicine and the mission of the New England Baptist Hospital.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program

  2. Current NP licensure to practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  3. Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Certification to practice as Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner

  4. Current DEA license

  5. Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification

POPULATION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  1. Reports to Director of Hospitalist Service and Patient Care Services, Administrative Director
