Over 12,000 homeless individuals are cared for by Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program each year. Job Summary:
Delivering on our mission means we utilize the tremendous skills and abilities of all staff. The Medical Assistant provides clinical and clerical support services essential to the overall functioning of the medical clinic.
Under the direction and supervision of both the registered nurses and medical assistants, and in accordance with the policies of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, procedures, protocols and standards of practice, you will participate in the delivery of patient care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinic team. You will also work with medical assistants and registered nurses throughout the shift to determine appropriate assignments, priorities, gather patient information important in the registration process, schedule follow-up appointments, prepare medical records for the clinic and assist with patient appointment confirmation calls and filing. As the Medical Assistant, you will also be responsible for communicating the status of delegated task completion and outcome of patient data findings.
Hours: Full time, M, W, F 8-4:30 and T, TH 11:30-8
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with RN and multidisciplinary team to conduct admission interviews, assessments and to determine appropriate work assignment and priorities; communicate status of delegated task completion as well as outcome of patient data findings to the appropriate staff member while maintaining timely ongoing verbal communication to ensure good patient care.
Accurately collect requested patient data (e.g. VS, weights, A1c); perform basic patient testing, including but not limited to tests for guiac, urine dip, glucose, fingerstick, 02 saturation, etc.
Treat patients in a manner that maintains and supports patient confidentiality as well as patients’ rights and dignity; provides education to patients regarding PCMH.
Assist nurses, providers, and MAs during complex treatments/procedures, including but not limited to preps and set-ups for examinations or treatments; check inventories, re-stock as needed; maintain appropriate equipment logs and records.
Attend daily team huddles when in clinic and attends BMC clinic staff meetings and team break-out sessions; participate in ongoing clinical quality improvement endeavors and identification of, and care planning for, high risk/enhanced care patients.
Escort and assist patients with transportation needs to and from BMC ED if appropriate as well as to an appointment at BMC if deemed appropriate by other staff members of the nursing/medical team.
Answer phones appropriately as needed; support and attend in-service education as required.
Confirm and communicate patient appointments to patients and staff as needed; assist with the scheduling of follow up appointments and new appointment consultations; maintain clinic files, patient records.
Qualifications:
Certified Medical Assistant with knowledge of medical terminology, vital signs, and phlebotomy preferred.
Experience in a medical environment preferred; administrative experience preferred; strong interest in serving vulnerable populations.
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred; additional compensation for demonstrated verbal proficiency and Spanish and English.
Computer literacy and skills; strong organizational and customer service skills.
Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier); proficient reading and writing skills in English.
Positive and effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
Compensation and Benefits:
The compensation starts at $18.52 per hour and increases based on years of experience.

In addition, eligible employees will receive yearly increases, additional annual compensation of seven thousand five hundred add to your base rate for demonstrated bilingual proficiency and the opportunity to work with local hospitals and community health centers.
