The Clinical Systems Technician is responsible for supporting and advancing patient care by applying technical skills to healthcare technology to the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) and Clinical Engineering Program and participating BILH entities. Provides technical support for networked clinical devices and systems.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Diagnoses, tests, troubleshoots, upgrades, and repairs network connected medical devices and system components of moderate to high complexity to manufacturer's specifications. Works with and understands the operation of wired and wireless IT networks and pertinent test equipment. This position is responsible for servicing equipment that carries critical patient data.   • Utilizes schematics, technical drawings, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals. Conducts periodic and routine preventive maintenance inspections on direct and indirect patient-care electronic instrumentation. (essential)

  • Prepares and maintains records of repairs, inspections, and maintenance using both 'paper' and 'computer' systems. Performs the installation of capital equipment purchases of direct patient-care-related electronic instrumentation. (essential)

  • Interfaces (as required) with manufacturers and IT staff on clinical and technical projects and problems. Maintains knowledge of advances in the biomedical and related IT field. (essential)

  • Remediates medical device vulnerabilities/hazards through software upgrade and patching. (essential)

  • Helps evaluate technologies, middleware, systems, and infrastructure required to support medical device integration and interoperability with electronic medical record systems. (essential)

  • Participates in after-hours emergency service coverage (On Call) as required. (essential)

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Systems Administration or Data Management preferred.

Licensure, Certification & Registration :

  • None required

Experience :

  • 3-5 years related work experience required.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and configuration of medical equipment used in the hospital and ambulatory healthcare environments.

  • Understanding of electronics, physiology, medical terminology, and networking.

  • Understanding of the design and use of medical device systems and interfaces.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills :

  • Moderate understanding of HL7 code, data streams, and clinical parameters.

  • Moderate understanding of middleware, interfaces, and serial devices used for data collection and transmission.

  • Proficiency in the use of personal computer applications including word processors and spreadsheets and technical drawing software including Microsoft Project and Visio.

Dept/Unit Specific Skills :

  • Proficient communication with biomedical equipment technician's, clinical engineers, vendors, information systems personnel, and clinical users.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

  • Social/Environmental Requirements: Work requires close attention to tasks for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work. Work requires constant response to changing circumstances and using new information to adjust approach and to quickly respond to new needs. Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Sensory Requirements: Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity > 20 feet, Visual clarity <3 feet, Hot/Cold, Sharp/Dull, Smell, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone, Background Noise.

  • Physical Requirements: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout hospital campuses. This job requires constant Keyboard use,frequent sitting, walking, standing, Fine Manipulation using one hand, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 10 lbs.There may be occasional bending neck, bending waist, twisting neck, twisting waist, Pushing/Pulling using both hands, Reaching-above shoulder height, Reaching-below shoulder height, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 10 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 25 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 50 lbs, Pushing items weighing up to 75 lbs, Pushing items weighing upto or more than 100 lbs.Rarely there may be Power Grasping using both hands.
