Processes patient surgical pathology specimens to paraffin, embeds tissue in paraffin, sections paraffin blocks using microtomes, stains prepared tissue, coverslips slides and assesses stains and sections microscopically for quality. Maintains equipment for proper functioning and quality control and supplies for efficiency. Maintains quality control and proper technique while performing various duties. Maintains patient identification at all times according to lab practice.

Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Histology Supervisor, process and embed surgical, biopsy, and autopsy tissue in paraffin. Prepare slides from paraffin blocks using microtomes at correct setting determined for individual tissue types.
Follows Standard Operating Procedures, prepares stains and solutions, and stains prepared tissue by using routine processes. Coverslips and evaluates microscopically the quality of stains and sections.
Maintains equipment for proper functioning and supply inventories. Maintains supplies and ensures clean work environment according to hospital's standard and approved protocols.
Prepares and maintains slides, solutions, and hazardous chemicals.
Participates in inter-shift coverage for time off, emergencies and holidays.
Prepares slides and blocks maintaining patient identification according to lab practices and other duties assigned, such as filing, levels, etc. within the Histology lab by Histology Supervisor or Lead Technician as needed.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent plus additional training in Histology field
Greater than 1 year applicable experience as a trained Histotechnician in a high complexity Histology Laboratory OR one year of Lab Support Assistant experience in a high complexity Histology laboratory followed by on the job training and demonstrated competency or other ‘clinical’ experience in a hospital/healthcare clinic.
Computer skills required: Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications, Microsoft Office applications which include Outlook, Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
Licensed ASCP Histotechnologist Certification preferred.
Successful completion of an accredited Histotechnology program preferred.

Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally
