Prepares tissue specimens for examination by Pathologists.
Embeds specimens in paraffin and cuts sections with a microtome.
Mounts and stains specimens on microscopic slides for diagnosis by Pathologists.
Processes and stains Cytology specimens for diagnosis by Pathologists.
Operates automated staining equipment, performs maintenance and troubleshoots performance issues.
Performs miscellaneous duties to support laboratory operations including monitoring temperature controlled equipment, changing stain reagents and managing inventory.
Assists with infection control through cleaning and maintenance of instruments and laboratory and disposal of excess tissue, waste stains and reagents.
Archives pathology materials.
Ensures laboratory's compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements, and Hospital and departmental policies, including safety, chemical hygiene and infection control.
Follows established procedures for quality control and assurance and assures continual implementation.
The Histology Tech Trainee must have the following:
- 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), OR an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree is required
