Department Description:The BIDMC Respiratory Care Department employs approximately 55 staff. Our therapists are assigned to one of 9 adult ICUs and are primarily focused on management of mechanical ventilation of the critically ill. They also provide coverage to an active Emergency Department, Cath Lab and acute care floors.

Job Summary:The Director of Respiratory Care Services is responsible for organizing and directing the clinical activities of the Respiratory Care Service to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients requiring respiratory care. Directly manages the respiratory therapists and support personnel assigned to the Respiratory Care Service. The Director of Respiratory Care Services works closely with the Medical Director of Respiratory Care to ensure the highest quality of Respiratory Care in both the ambulatory and in-patient settings. This position consults as needed with other Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Network Affiliate Respiratory Services to support clinical practice and initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Respiratory Care clinical staff to implement and evaluate respiratory care programs to meet the needs of patients and to be consistent with state-of-the-art patient care standards.

  • Collaborates with the Medical Director of Respiratory Care and the Respiratory Care clinical staff to develop, validate, and implement clinical competency assessments to establish the clinical competence of all care providers_ Competencies will be specific to diagnostic and age related needs of the patient population. Administers competency assessment of staff.

  • Serves as an educator, mentor, and resource relative to the current practice of respiratory care for respiratory care staff, house officers, nurses, medical students, and respiratory therapy students. Participates in professional activities, including participating in clinical and research activities related to the assessment and treatment of pulmonary patients.

  • Represents the Medical Center at state, regional, and national meetings by individual or collaborate publication, or input to government affairs.

  • Assists in on-going and annual competency and performance assessment. Provides timely feedback, support, organization and direction for all levels of staff. Coordinates operations for Respiratory Care services to ensure compliance with department, medical center, and regulatory body requirements.

  • Has the authority to direct and support managers with functional area responsibilities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: 4-6 Indirect Reports: 11-20

  • Has full responsibility for planning, monitoring and managing department budget.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Care required. Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care preferred.

  • License Respiratory Therapist License required., and Registration Reg Respiratory Therapist required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.

  • 5-8 years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required

  • Experience or certification in one or more specialty areas of Respiratory Care, e.g., critical care, neonatal care, or pulmonary function testing.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  • Team Work:Ability to lead collaborative teams for larger projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have implications for the management and operations of multiple areas of the organization.
