Director of Infection Control
Department Description:The Division of Infection Control/Hospital Epidemiology is part of the Silverman Institute for Health Care Quality and Safety with a focus on prevention of infections in our patients, visitors and staff. We are a dynamic and growing team of three hospital epidemiologists and seven infection control practitioners.
BIDMC has a history of innovation in the areas of health care delivery and infection prevention. Our priority is using surveillance data to partner with frontline staff in quality improvement initiatives to mitigate infection risks. As an academic healthcare epidemiology program, our goal is to participate in education and research activities to share our knowledge, both within the institution and nationally.

Job Summary:Reporting directly to the Senior Medical Director, Division of Infection Control/Hospital Epidemiology (IC/HE), the Director is an experienced Infection Control Practitioner (ICP, either RN, MPH or microbiologist) who provides day-to-day leadership and direction for the hospital-wide program for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections. The Director will have direct responsibility for the supervision of all non-physician staff and management of daily operations, including routine surveillance and data collection to assess compliance with infection control standards. The Director, jointly with the Senior Medical Director and Medical Directors, will represent IC/HE at BIDMC leadership committees and partner with leadership to design and implement organizational strategies to achieve safe, quality standards for infection control and national best practices for patient safety. The Director will participate in all multidisciplinary infection prevention initiatives, serving as a resource for infection control practices across the hospital and off sites. Working closely with the Medical Directors, the Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the hospital's infection control program to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.
Represents or selects ICP representation for infection control on all hospital committees that require infection control input, including standing committees and multidisciplinary initiatives.
Assumes leadership role in the development and implementation of process improvement projects related to clinical practice that supports organizational goals related to infection control best practice.
Assumes leadership role, jointly with Medical Directors, in assuring that hospital-wide infection control guidelines and policies meet best practice and accreditation standards, including related portions of guidelines and policies in clinical and operational departments.
Works closely with Medical Directors to plan and deploy educational resources for health care workers across the hospital to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, including the Joint Commission and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Serves as primary infection control contact as needed for surveyors from BPHC, MA DPH and the Joint Commission.
Has the authority to direct and support employees daily work activities. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action and performance reviews. Direct Reports: More than 7 Indirect Reports: None
Assists in planning, monitoring and/or managing budget in functional area of department.
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Infection Control, Public Health, Epidemiology, or Statistics preferred.
License Registered Nurse preferred., and Certificate 1 Cert. in Infection Control required.
5-8 years related work experience required in infection control in a tertiary care environment and 1-3 years supervisory/management experience required
Board certification in Infection Control (CIC) must be maintained. Professional licensure in related field (RN, MT, etc) must be maintained as active.
Ability to identify the resources and time required to achieve specific project goals, and effectively communicate recommendations and strategies to a broad audience.
Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills required for effective supervision and collaboration; specific knowledge in change management, and the ability to achieve goals with defined resource and timeline.
Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
