Job Summary: Cytogenetic Technologists perform cytogenetic testing on amniotic fluids, chorionic villus, products of conception, bone marrows and peripheral bloods according to Standard Operating Procedures. The Cytogenetic Technologist is also responsible for confirming accuracy of test results and reporting laboratory findings to the Clinical Director and other Clinicians. Cytogenetic Technologists may function as Technical Leaders. Prime responsibility of this position is working at the Cytogenetics FISH section to perform constitutional and oncology FISH testing, analysis and review. Potential candidate required to have at least 2 to 3 years of FISH analysis experience.

This position is 100% on-site.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Initiates and maintains cultures under sterile conditions. Prepares and harvests materials. Prepares and stains slides. Microscopically examines slides: counts and analyzes chromosomes or in situ hybridizations. Captures images using imaging system. Evaluates test results, enters results into the LIS and reports results to the Medical Director. Ensures accuracy of test results.

  2. Performs start-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures on instruments and laboratory equipment per established laboratory protocols. Peforms and evaluates QC and calibration, and data entry and assessment.

  3. Keeps current with developments in laboratory medicine by mandatory and voluntary continuing education, competency testing and Quality Assurance. Participates in the running and resulting of mandated Proficiency Testing Samples.

  4. Participates in the evaluation of new methods, procedures and instruments. Writes technical Standard Operating Procedures and maintains them for accuracy, and regulatory compliance under the direction of the Cytogenetic Technologist Leader, Clinical Manager, and Pathologist. Participates in training of other staff members.

  5. Maintains adequate supplies for all work areas. Assists with inventory assessment and ensures there are sufficient reagents and supplies to complete patient testing.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Diagnostic Genetics Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Technology required.

  2. Certificate 1 ASCP Registered preferred.

  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.

  4. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. One year clinical laboratory experience.

  7. Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
