The Fetal-Neonatal Neuroimaging and Developmental Science Center (FNNDSC) at BCH is seeking a full-time research assistant for NIH funded projects that investigate brain health using advanced Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in various infant populations, including babies with hydrocephalus, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and those born prematurely. Additionally, the candidate will be involved in other clinical projects developed in the FNNDSC that use advanced NIRS technologies to study brain health of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease or other neurological disease. These studies are primarily conducted across several locations at BCH, including the NICU, other ICUs and operating rooms. This position will require some after hours and weekend study sessions.


  • Work closely with the PI on the coordination of multiple multi-institutional research studies

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date and organized study records

  • Perform data entry, assessment, and basic quantitative analyses

  • Work with other research assistants to assist PI on the preparation of IRB applications and amendments

  • Attend workshops, courses, and seminars to further own knowledge of science as well as study management

  • Consult with other researchers and technicians to exchange information

  • Recruit patient families for enrollment in studies

  • Work with other study members to perform study in the NICU, the operating room or patient units

  • Coordinate clinical- and research-specific testing with healthcare providers, parents, and research assistants

  • Assist the PI in developing and implementing systems and protocols to manage daily operations of studies, while meeting enrollment and data collection targets and adhering to human protection, good clinical practice guidelines, and handling of highly sensitive content

  • Assist the PI in brainstorming at all points of the research process and help articulate new avenues of scientific inquiry. The employee is expected to make substantial intellectual contributions to the research process

  • Help the PI prepare manuscripts and grant progress reports for submission, including data collection and analysis, table and figure creation, reviewing literature, writing and editing drafts, and other related duties as requested

  • Maintain an organized working environment.

  • Contribute to teamwork within and between departments and organizations


  • A BA or BS

  • A strong background in writing and research skills and the ability to work independently

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • The ability to keep meticulous records

  • Prior experience in clinical research and IRB preparation, preferred.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn how to use protocol-specific software and web-based systems, strongly preferred

  • Comfort interacting with potentially sensitive parents during general interactions for scheduling and conducting research sessions

During a public health emergency, individuals in this role may be expected to take on additional duties to respond to organizational needs.
