Job Summary: Under the direction of the Supervisor, assists with maintaining the Sentinel Health Surveillance Program, monitors cage wash and husbandry staff, inspects animal colonies for health and wellbieng and provides treatments according to departmenral standard operating procedures and Veterinarian instructions. Provides technical assistance and training with rodent procedures to include proper handling and restraint, anesthesia, bloodletting techniques and other common small animal techniques. Assists with inventory control including feed and bedding and personal protective equipment.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains the Sentinel Health Surveillance Program including obtaining samples and preparing these samples for transport to an external diagnostic laboratory according to departmental standard procedures and schedules determined by the Veterinarian. Review sample results with the Supervisor and update room entry order documents.

  2. Assists the Supervisor or Manager with cage wash and husbandry staff assignments ensuring that all scheduled work is completed according to the departmental standard operating procedures.

  3. Monitors health and wellbeing of all animal colonies. Provides medical treatments as determined by the department standard operating procedures, approved protocols or Veterinarian instruction. Records all pertinent information on required departmental forms.

  4. Reports all health conditions to the Supervisor, Manager or Veterinarian immediately and communicates health concerns and treatments with respective research groups.

  5. Evaluate all incoming animal orders for accuracy of name, strain, age, weight and gender. Place appropriate cage cards on each box, disinfect according to standard operating procedures for the site and place boxes outside the respective holding room. Ensure that any special instruction are relayed to the caretaker and denoted on the respective cage card. House new animals as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Animal Science or related field preferred.

  2. Certificate 1 Laboratory Animal Technician preferred., and Certificate 2 Asst Laboratory Animal Tech preferred.

  3. 1-3 years related work experience required.

  4. Three years previous experience in a Laboratory Animal setting working with rodents, having been directly involved with various technical procedures in addition to basic husbandry skills.

  5. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

  4. Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.

  5. Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.

  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.

  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
