About the Job

Position Summary:

As a member of the High Risk Intervention Team, the Emergency Department Recovery Coach provides support to individuals who present to the ED with substance use disorder (SUD). This role serves as a recovery guide and role model in the recovery process. This includes assisting individuals to identify and overcome barriers to recovery, and encouraging hope, optimism and health, providing support with problem solving and advocacy.

Essential Role Responsibilities:

· Act as a resource for any individual who presents to the ED seeking services for a substance use disorder.

· Link the individual to treatment and recovery resources including but not limited to Acute Treatment Services, sober housing, benefits, and Narcan education.

· Collaborate with staff in the ED including nurses, behavioral health clinicians and medical providers.

· Provide short-term telephonic (or text) or in-person follow-up support, coaching, and assistance to help the individual access treatment or recovery support services.

· Connect the individual with appropriate treatment or recovery services including a Community Support Program (CSP) to encourage continued treatment and recovery support.

· Provides education to individuals and family members on the recovery process.

· Knowledge of basic crisis intervention, Motivational interviewing, and case management techniques preferred.

· Demonstrates good boundaries regarding confidentiality and personal relationships, while at the same time be able to share personal knowledge about recovering from a substance use disorder.

· Refer the individual to Intensive Case Management Program (ICM) if within their health insurance benefit.

· Complete training provided by agency and participates in ongoing supervision by a staff person who is also trained and as a Recovery Coach and has a greater length of experience than the supervisee as a Recovery Coach;

· Ensures that all written and billing documentation is complete in a timely manner.

· Assists the readmission team as well as the Moms Do Care Program as needed.

· Other related duties as assigned.

Scheduled Hours

40 hours per week, evening shift.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team unit

· Self-starter who is able to work with little direction

· Ability to overcome obstacles in a positive, productive manner

· Problem solving skills are critical

· Strong communication skills


· 18 years or older and high school diploma required; bachelor degree preferred.

· Recovery Coach Certification plus 5 years’ experience.

· Driver’s license and car required.

· Be a Peer with lived addiction experience.

· Have at least two years of current, sustained recovery without reoccurrence.
