Job Summary

Performs specialized technical duties, working with the optometrist to provide chair side assistance and conduct preliminary tests on

patients. Duties include taking detailed patient histories, measuring visual acuity, autorefraction, tonometry, measuring the curvature of

the cornea (Keratometry), glaucoma screening, visual field testing, instilling drops and other duties as required. Additionally, provides

backup for Receptionist duties when they are absent, such as scheduling and contact lens sales.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares patients for examination by taking a detailed patient history for the purpose of gathering base-line information prior to the examination by the optometrist.

  • Instills ocular pharmaceuticals in the patient's eyes and records findings in the medical record at the direction of the

optometrist.

  • Performs computerized visual field testing.

  • When needed, provides education and training on the insertion and removal of contact lenses.

  • Determines when and which parameters of trial contact lenses may be given out to patients as well as rewriting and

releasing written eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions.

  • Helps coordinate the schedule for the optometrist and optician under the direction of the Manager of the Eye Care

Services.

  • Schedules appointments for appropriate eye care referrals and follow-up appointments either at UHS or with outside

specialists and prepares written referrals under the direction of the Director of Eye Care Services

  • Understands and stays up to date on third party eye insurance plans; explains benefits to patients, submits claims online,

and solves any issues with billing and insurance.

  • Orders, receives, and verifies the accuracy of prescription orders of contact lenses and maintains stock inventory.

  • Orders pharmaceuticals and contact lens solutions as well as tracks samples and expiration dates.

  • Maintains reception area equipment and eye care supplies.

Other Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Certification as an optometric technician or equivalent experience equal to at least two (2) years relevant optometric

experience.

  • Knowledge of optometric terminology, procedures, and optometric billing.

  • Ability to work with staff and students.

  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.

  • Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA) or Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT) must be obtained within 18 months of

hire.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Experience in grinding of eyeglass lenses and assembly.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical eye clinic environment.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5 pm.
