Job Summary
The Communications and Events Coordinator/Communications and Events Manager directs communications, events, and oversees website, and social media communications leading to the advancement of the strategic goals for the Department of Communication. This position is responsible for developing and implementing a wide variety of departmental events.
Essential Functions
Manages the department’s online presence and promotes the department in social media outlets. Shares department news and events with College communications and marketing staff, and collaborates with College staff. Creates and maintains a public calendar of department events, and other public events that benefit department faculty, staff, and students.
Develops and writes feature ideas and content. Researches and selects story concepts and communicates with the parties involved to arrange for interviews. Writes feature stories and news items for the web, including selecting photos and/or videos. Writes, designs, edits, produces, and distributes electronic newsletters and other informational communication for current and prospective students and alumni.
Manages the content of the department’s website and promotes the department’s online course offerings and certificate program, and special areas of research and outreach. Responsible for the ongoing development and upkeep of the website with fresh and timely content.
Oversees the creation of promotional materials for student recruitment, program development, alumni development, and other purposes that advance the department’s strategic goals.
Develops and implements department events and activities that align with the strategic goals of the department for recruitment and retention of students, and alumni development. Directs or assists with a wide variety of on-site and occasional off-site events, including events for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other external constituents.
Collaborates with the department scholarship committee to determine scholarship award deadlines, promote opportunities, communicate award recipient information, and steward department scholarship opportunities.
Works with the Undergraduate Program Director, Graduate Program Director, and Director of Undergraduate Advising to track post-graduate student employment and develop a list of internship and alumni mentoring opportunities. Develops communication initiatives to increase student response rates to existing tracking mechanisms for evaluating student success and satisfaction.
Manages the schedule and reservations of departmental event spaces, such as the Communication Hub.
Manages special projects as directed by the Chair or Associate Chair.
Communications and Events Manager has the following additional essential functions
Supervises 1-2 undergraduate student assistants.
Other Functions
Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet department, executive area/division, and university goals and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor's Degree.
Excellent writing, editing, verbal and interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly develop and sustain productive relationships with a variety of internal and external constituents.
High-level attention to detail with the ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize while maintaining high standards of accuracy and quality.
Ability to contribute toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
Capacity, skill, and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
Understanding of best practices in existing technologies and the potential of new technologies to advance the goals of the position.
Knowledge of current media technology, including desktop publishing, web maintenance, social media, and/or video/photography, and a willingness to learn new media technologies as they emerge.
Capability to work successfully with diverse populations.
Ability to contribute to the implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a respectful, inclusive environment that is supportive of diversity.
Ability to maintain confidential or sensitive and/or not yet public university-related information only in the performance of the responsibilities of position and ability to exercise care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.
Communications and Events Manager additional minimum qualifications
Two years of professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Experience with Drupal, basic HTML and CSS coding, Adobe Photoshop, video production, and video editing.
Experience in communications and web management.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Typical office work environment.
Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm.
This is a 43-week position.
Occasional night or weekend hours may be required.
