Description:
A primary care Family Medicine nurse practitioner is a licensed independent practitioner who provides nursing and medical services to individuals, families and groups. A nurse practitioner diagnoses and manages acute episodic and chronic illnesses while emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention. Services may include ordering, conducting, supervising and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests, and prescription of pharmacologic agents and non pharmacologic therapies. If there is future need, the primary care nurse
practitioner might be asked to carry a small panel of their own patients.
A physician assistant may approach patients of all ages and with all types of conditions; elicit histories; perform examinations; order, perform and interpret diagnostic studies; order and perform therapeutic procedures; instruct
and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health issues; respond to life threatening situations; and facilitate the appropriate referral of patients; consistent with his or her supervising physician’s scope of expertise
and responsibility delegated to him or her by the supervising physician. If there is future need, the primary care physician assistant might be asked to carry a small panel of their own patients.
The NP/PA’s clinical time will be primarily conducting same day visit, for the department’s primary care panel of patients. In this role the provider will work 75% of their time in the primary care role and 25% of their time in support of
the primary care panel of the department’s team. In the support role, the provider will be responsible for ordering, conducting, supervising, and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests, and prescription of pharmacologic agents and non-pharmacologic therapies.
