Time Type:

Full time

Department:

South End Recovery Services

All Locations:

1601 Washington Street, 26 Sturgis Street - PACE Winthrop, East Boston

Description:

The Addiction Medicine/Primary Care Position offers an opportunity to engage in addiction medicine and full-spectrum primary care through respective departments at NeighborHealth. Formerly East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, we are one of the largest community health center systems (FQHC) in the country, serving diverse communities in Boston and surrounding cities. As presently conceived, the Position will be 50% Recovery Services and 50% Primary Care.

Our Recovery Services department strives to treat patients with substance use disorders using a holistic harm reduction model to seamlessly integrate their medical and behavioral care both within our department and across our organization. As such, the Addiction Medicine Nurse Practitioner in this Position will be part of a multidisciplinary team caring for individuals, families and groups of patients from diverse nearby communities, interfacing with providers in psychiatry, behavioral health, and support services. Our Recovery Services are based in the East Boston and South End neighborhoods of Boston.

The core responsibilities of providers in our Recovery Services department are to diagnose, treat and manage substance use disorders in our patient population in a manner that is evidence based as well individualized. With SUD’s so often being co-morbid with psychiatric disorders and infectious diseases, the Addiction Medicine Nurse Practitioner would ideally provide suitable psychopharmacological care when indicated, of a complexity that is commonly provided by providers in primary care settings, as well as screening for and treatment of common STI’s. There may be opportunities to provide more complex psychiatric care, as well as treatment of infections such as HCV.

The primary care departments of NeighborHealth are committed to providing high quality holistic care in patient centered medical homes. This is made possible by the close collaboration of the staff in our various medical, behavioral health, dental, optical and other departments, bringing together their individual passion and talents. There are opportunities through this Position, but not requirements, to provide primary pediatric care and more specialized women's health services. We provide primary care at locations in East Boston, Boston's South End and Winthrop.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Providing care for substance use disorders at our East Boston and South End Recovery Services locations, depending on program needs

• Providing primary care in a patient centered medical home at one of our several Primary Care locations

• Taking histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting tests

• Documenting all clinical findings, reasoning and plans

• Prescribing pharmacologic agents, utilizing non-pharmacologic therapies and making referrals

to other health center departments and outside institutions

• Working in a holistic, patient-focused system

• Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including registered nurses, behavioral health

therapists, peer recovery specialists, and psychiatric specialists to ensure integration of services

• Demonstrating critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making

• Communicating effectively with patients and coworkers

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Massachusetts nurse practitioner license

• Certification or eligibility as an Addictions Registered Nurse - Advance Practice (CARN-AP) preferred

• Two to four years of clinical experience caring for patients with substance use disorders preferred

post completion of a nurse practitioner program

• BLS Certification
