State of Massachusetts Recreational Coordinator- Southeast Region in Taunton, Massachusetts

The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is the juvenile justice agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We work with young people who are detained or committed and provide detention, custody, diagnosis, education and support to young people ages 7-21. Most of the youth served are between the ages 14 and 18. The Department promotes positive change for the youth committed to our care in part, by providing adolescent-focused rehabilitation to youth in residential treatment.

The Department of Youth Services employs staff in various professions and backgrounds in order to engage young people in strategies that support positive change. As a key member of the residential team, the Recreation Coordinator leads program activities during non-school hours in the residential programs to support all aspects of the milieu and positive programming.

We are seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Recreation Coordinator. Incumbents of positions in this series are responsible for planning and organizing recreational, social instructional or special activities, recommend use of recreational areas, motivate youth and staff to engage in recreational activities, conduct training sessions for agency personnel, determine, organize, and schedule appropriate activities to ensure that there is structure and consistency to the programming, enforce rules and regulations, and perform related work as required.

The Recreation Coordinator performs related care and security activities that include observation and reporting of conduct and behavior of the youth in the residential programs to ensure safety and security is maintained and activities are conducted safely. They are part of the residential program team that provides guidance and direction to the Group Workers to ensure scheduled activities are followed as designed and planned.

The Recreation Coordinator III’s primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with health and wellness teachers within the program to plan, develop, and implement indoor and outdoor physical activities, recreational and leisure time activities to develop positive social skills.

  • Prepare reports and summaries of recreational, physical education programs; maintain essential records, files of staff as well as, the program results.

  • Evaluate and report on the condition of recreational areas, sport fields, facilities of existing programs, equipment and needs of youth to adapt and participate in the recreation and physical educational programs.

  • Keep accounting records of funds needed and review the status of accounts to prevent overspending while operating within a budget.

  • Coordinate special events that include family engagement, inter-unit competitions, special guest speakers and other events that enhance youth engagement.

  • Work with residential program team to ensure proper security, control and supervision of shift.

  • Collaborate with residential program team to ensure all unit policies, rules and regulations are followed.

  • Employ de-escalation techniques and provide physical interventions where appropriate and necessary in accordance with Departmental policies to diffuse crisis situations and ensure safety and security of youth and staff.

  • Attend training's in crisis intervention and re-certified in CPR (every year).

Attend meetings and other training's as required.

  • Take initiative to create or improve current systems and procedures for efficiently and effectively engaging youth in recreational and physical education activities.

  • Act as a liaison for communication of any concerns or problems from direct-reports up through chain of command.

  • Follow up and finish all tasks assigned by supervisor or administration.

Other related duties as assigned.

Schedule :

12pm to 8pm or 1pm to 9pm (with one weekend day off)

This is a Civil Service position. If there is no Civil Service list for this title, employees appointed must take and pass the next Civil Service examination when administered.

The ideal candidate is flexible and responsive to change. Employees in this position may be required to work extended hours, nights, holidays and/or weekends.

Our residential facilities require 24/7 monitoring; assigned shifts include day, evening and nights.

Please note that incumbents in this position are designated emergency personnel.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instituting or conducting therapeutic services in a recognized public or private agency, and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for two years of the required (A) experience.*

II. A Master's or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
