IDEXX Laboratories is recruiting for a Laboratory Lead in our busy Parasitology Department. Looking for experienced Veterinary or Medical Lab Technicians/Technologists looking for a leadership opportunity.

The Laboratory Lead I performs a dual role as Lead and Individual Contributor as follows:

Lead Responsibilities:

Leads activities of a work group, managing workflow and ensuring turnaround times are met. Serves as informational resource. May perform other administrative duties including making department schedules, gathering performance metrics, leading shift work, backing up Supervisors, serving on project teams, business review reporting, ordering supplies and other responsibilities.

Individual Contributor Responsibilities:

Laboratory Technician/Technologist:

Performs laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.

In addition to Laboratory Technician/Technologist responsibilities, may also have the following responsibilities:

Specimen Processor:

Receives and prepares samples for laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples on slides or other testing format, records required information and sends to appropriate specialty lab area.

Customer Service:

May perform variety of customer service activities for internal and external customers.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specializes in one or more of the following areas:

Parasitology

  • Examining samples to identify parasites, utilizing fecal flotation and various microscopic techniques.

Customer Service

  • Performing variety of customer service activities for internal and external customers, providing information, resolving issues and ensuring customer satisfaction. Responding to customer phone and other communications, addresses questions/issues/problems/concerns such as researching documentation, correcting processing errors, answering send out test questions, directing/resolving technical calls, compiling customer information for pathologist review, receiving add-on requests, holding samples and calculations, troubleshooting/coordinating shipments and printing requisition forms. Performing various administrative duties including answering phones, preparing deliveries, filing forms, preparing timecards, providing systems support and other activities. Coordinating sample collection and shipping as assigned. Maintaining records and preparing various reports and analyses as appropriate.

Performs other duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, 2, 3 or 4 year degree in Science-related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Typically 5-7 years related experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of lab equipment, procedures and multiple specialties. .

  • Supervisory skills.

  • General science background, including hematology/chemistry helpful.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Positive, can-do attitude.

  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) as appropriate.

  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office.

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist under American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Lab Technologist or equivalent military certification preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Extensive sitting, phone and computer use.

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours.

  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers.

  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch.

  • May be required to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Hearing acuity sufficient to effectively communicate with customers and Employees via telephone and in person.

  • Ability to communicate verbally on phone and in person.

  • Fluency in the English language.

  • Extended hours may be required.

  • Some travel required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present.

  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
