Job Summary:

Under general supervision and following established procedures, operates highly technical Ultrasound equipment which produces high frequency sound to acquire images for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates Ultrasound equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information according to departmental protocol. In doing so, ensures the patient is properly prepared, positioned. Selects proper imaging factors, and images the designated portion(s) of the body.

  2. Explains exam to patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.) Delivers patient care under scope of license/training.

  3. Maintain effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel, i.e. professional, nursing, etc.

  4. Calibrate and verify the operation of all equipment to be used during the work day. To notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.

  5. Executes paperwork as necessary for each patient exam (e.g. schedule exam, complete exam, transfer images to PACS, etc.

  6. Reviews order for procedure assuring all information is complete and accurate, interviews patient for pregnancy, allergies, and general history.

  7. Reviews physician chart order and patient history with radiologist and informs radiologist if patient’s condition is not favorable.

  8. Attend staff meetings, in-services and maintains appropriate CEU’s in accordance with Massachusetts State Licensure and RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) requirements

  9. May oversee, instruct and orientate various and new personnel within the department.

    1. Maintains the necessary equipment, supplies, maintenance records and daily log as required

    2. Performs duties in crisis and emergency situations. Follows and observes established policies and procedures to assure accurate completion of the task.

    3. Answers department telephones providing routine information, taking messages, and/or referring call to appropriate party. Understands the file room and procedures necessary to locate reports and images. Performs clerical duties to assure completeness of work during off shift hours.

      1. Prepare the equipment, room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and
        supply room as needed.

      2. Acknowledge and participate in quality assurance and quality improvement projects carried on in the department ( i.e. cost containment)

      3. Assume responsibilities for on-call coverage and to remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

      4. Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.

      5. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, and disaster plans.

      6. Uses independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

      7. Performs all other duties as directed.

      Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position

      Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:

    • Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekend hours.

    • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.

    • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques, procedures.

    • Work requires several weeks of training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.

    • Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace with the department, with frequent interruptions.

    • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

    • Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.).

    • Comprehensive understanding of computer operations relating to patient information and management (CPSI, PAC’s etc.).

    • Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.

    • Must be aware of hazards within the department (ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standards established by the hospital and regulatory agencies.

    • Communication skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to department manager, radiologist, staff, patients and other hospital personnel.

      Ability to:

    • Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all department-related equipment as described on the Department checklist. Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.

    • Ability to stand and walk constantly.

    • Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

    • Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.

    • Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, squatting, pulling, pushing, and reaching required, as well as the ability to remain stationary for short periods and perform repetitive motions

    • Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties.

      Working Conditions:

      1. Duties include patient care responsibilities with subsequent exposure to human waste and similar
        unpleasant elements.
      2. Subject to frequent stressful situations
      3. Lifting and transferring patients from table to stretcher
      4. Periodic exposure to poor lighting

      Credentials and Experience Required

    • Must have graduated from an approved/accredited Ultrasound School

    • Minimum two years prior experience is preferred in OB/Gyn and general ultrasound to include but not limited to peripheral venous and carotid studies

    • Must be RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) or ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) registered

    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) certification

      Special Requirements

    • Regular workweek in which additional hours are often required

    • Flexibility of work schedule (i.e. hours/ days)

    • Position requires frequent on-call work.

    • Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
