Nantucket Cottage Hospital Radiology Technologist in Nantucket, Massachusetts

Job Summary: Under general supervision and following established procedures, operates all ionizing radiation equipment to include but not limited to the portable unit, C-arm unit, and fluoroscopic unit to acquire images for use by physicians in diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Operates all X-ray equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information according to departmental protocol. In doing so, ensures the patient is properly prepared, positioned, immobilized and uses protective shielding on the patient as needed. Selects proper imaging factors and images the designated portion(s) of the body.

  2. Explains exam to patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintains ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.) Delivers patient care under scope of license/training.

  3. Maintain effective working relations and communication with departmental and other hospital personnel, i.e. department manager, professional, nursing, etc.

  4. Calibrate and verify the operation of all equipment to be used during the work day. To notify appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.

  5. Executes paperwork / computer process as necessary for each patient exam (e.g. schedule exam, complete exam, transfer images to PACS, etc.).

  6. Review orders for procedure assuring all information is complete and accurate, interviews patient for pregnancy, allergies, medications and general history.

  7. Reviews physician chart order and patient history with radiologist and informs radiologist if patient’s condition is not favorable.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities continued:

  1. Attend staff meetings, in-services and maintains appropriate CEU’S in accordance with Massachusetts State Licensure and ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist) requirements.

  2. May oversee, instruct and orientate various and new personnel within the department.

  3. Maintains the necessary equipment, supplies, maintenance records and daily logs as required.

  4. Perform duties in crisis and emergency situations. Follow and observes established policies and procedures to assure accurate completion of the task.

  5. Answers department telephones providing routine information, taking messages, and/or referring call to appropriate party. Understand the file room and computer systems for procedures necessary to locate reports and images. Performs clerical duties to assure completeness of work during off shift hours.

  6. Prepare the equipment, room and supplies necessary for each patient and regular daily use. Stock and supply room as needed.

  7. To acknowledge and participate in quality assurance and quality improvement projects carried on in the department (i.e. cost containment)

  8. To assume responsibilities for on-call coverage and to remain flexible in all shift coverage and overtime situations as necessary.

  9. Transport and transfer patients using established procedures according to departmental guidelines.

  10. Uses independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations when performing patient exams.

  11. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills and disaster plans.

  12. Performs all other duties as directed.

  • Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekend hours.

  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.

  • Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging processes, techniques and procedures.

  • Work requires several weeks of training to acquire necessary familiarity with imaging procedures, techniques and methods.

  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, frequent interruptions.

  • Presents a positive attitude and a professional appearance.

  • Must be physically capable of lifting (linen, supplies, patients, etc.)

  • Comprehensive understanding of computer operations relating to patient information and management (CPSI, PAC’s etc.).

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team.

  • Must be aware of hazards with the department (ionizing radiation, universal precautions, etc.) and adhere to safety standard established by the hospital and regulatory agencies.

  • Communication skills sufficient to resolve conflicts, and relay information concisely to department manager, radiologist, staff, patients and other hospital personnel.

Ability to:

  • Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all department-related equipment as described on the Department checklist. Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.

  • Ability to stand and walk constantly.

  • Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

  • Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.

  • Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, squatting, pulling, pushing, and reaching required, as well as the ability to remain stationary for short periods and perform repetitive motions

  • Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties.

Working Conditions:

  1. Duties include patient care responsibilities with subsequent exposure to human waste and similar unpleasant elements.
  2. Failure to follow established procedures and safety practices could result in exposure to radioactivity.
  3. Subject to frequent stressful situations.
  4. Lifting and transferring patients from table to stretcher.
  5. Periodic exposure to poor lighting.

    Credentials and Experience Required

    • Graduate of an accredited School of Radiologic Technology

    • Prior experience to greater than 2 years.

    • Ability to perform radiography procedures required; either mammography or CT procedures preferred.

    • Massachusetts License required/ARRT Registered preferred.

    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (“CPR”) certification required. Special Requirements

    • Regular workweek in which additional hours are often required.

    • Flexibility of work schedule (i.e. hours/days)

    • Position requires frequent on-call work.

    • Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
