Johns Hopkins University Physician Assistant in Lynn, Massachusetts

The Department of Medicine, Division of Occupational Health is seeking a Physician Assistant (Health Educator/Coach). This position is responsible for providing health education and coaching services to clients with complex, chronic or multiple co-morbid medical conditions across the wellness-illness continuum. The population focus is on individuals who have been diagnosed with chronic conditions and have multiple barriers impeding their ability to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors.

The Physician Assistant (Health Educator/Coach) must individualize the coaching process in order to move the patient towards sustainable lifestyle behavior changes including self-empowerment and development of a stable social support system.

Requires successful navigation of a myriad of resources including mental health counselors, pharmacists, dieticians, nutritionists, fitness trainers, etc. Health Educator/Coach analyzes and understands the individuals use of pharmaceutical modalities, medication adherence, inpatient and emergency room utilization and can integrate lower cost options with the goal to positively affect the individuals medical spend trend from high cost utilization to lower cost options.

This position also provides clinical care for the Medical Department of GE Aviation, including direct patient care. The position reports directly to the JHU Medical Director and Clinical Operations Director at the GE Aviation plant in Lynn, MA.

Responsibilities – Health Educator/Coach:

Provides individualized health coaching to clients in obtaining their health objectives. Teaches others about managing their mental and physical health. Supports clients in learning how to make good choices for themselves. Creates and adapts wellness objectives to overcome barriers to good mental and physical health based on needs of, and with input from, clients.

Co-facilitates groups/classes to support improved health outcomes. Works closely with on-site clinical staff to engage clients in appropriate services and resources and assist with coordination of care. Promotes consumer engagement in therapy with clinicians, engagement with psychiatric appointments, compliance with the healthcare registry, involvement and engagement with wellness services and engagement with primary care.

Completes all tracking and reporting requirements for outcomes and evaluation Maintains appropriate professional standards and provides appropriate follow-up for consumers. Provides self-help recovery services and other peer wellness services. Function as a proactive team with the occupational health group, productivity services group, prevention and wellness group, site fitness center personnel and business Health Ahead champions to modify and mitigate health risk behaviors. Support health fairs, Health Risk Assessments (HRA) and activities for large, mid-size, and small groups.

Develop and coordinate educational activities based on aggregate data from HRA claims, predictive modeling, and regional demographics. Provide educational information at health fairs to educate members with at risk values and lifestyle based on risk assessments and/or biometric screenings.

Provide referrals to GE internal or Third Party Resources (Condition or Case Management, EAP, Health coaches, etc.)

Promote complementary care settings and techniques such as group visits, remote patient monitoring, telemedicine, telehealth, and behavior modification and motivation techniques for appropriate patient populations Schedule regular visits and activities within the plant to serve as the ‘face of the medical center’.

Perform other duties as requested by Medical Director, Clinical Operations Director and/or JHU Management team.

Responsibilities – Physician Assistant:

Clinical Care:

Evaluation and management of patients with both work-related and non-work related injuries and illnesses. Perform history and physicals for purposes of pre-placement, surveillance, return-to-work and fitness for duty and foreign travel. Perform diagnostic testing: audiometry, spirometry, breath alcohol, visual screening, electrocardiograms specimen collection: phlebotomy, urine collections etc; vaccine administration; response to medical emergencies. Case management health screening patient/health education.

Operational Activities:

Ensure the provision of prompt, appropriate clinical care to all patients in conformance with GE & JHU clinical protocols, state regulations and professional standards. Develop relationships with “key” GE management to achieve continually increasing customer satisfaction and penetration. Assist in development of systems and procedures to ensure consistent efficient operation and adherence to JHU’s philosophy, standards and all applicable regulations. Ensure timely and appropriate problem resolution and follow up to GE patients and management. Ensure all patients and clients receive prompt, courteous, friendly and professional attention to their needs and requests.

Assist in orientation of all new clinic personnel. Assist in development of new administrative policies and procedures as needed to ensure smooth operation of GE clinic. Work with Plant Physician, Regional Coordinator, Director and Assistant Director of Occupational Medicine to resolve problems in the clinic. Coordinate and arrange specialty referrals as necessary.

Ensure staff knowledge and application of OSHA regulations/safety standards and the GE/JHU policies and procedures. Conduct self in an exemplary fashion to achieve goals and set example for others within the GE clinic. Establish communication channels with staff, physicians, contractors and consultants to ensure that they receive information on internal and external issues which effect the operations of the assigned areas as well as provide advice, assistance and service that aids them in attaining their related objectives. Address patient complaints and ensure prompt resolution of their concerns. Ensure all facilities are neat, clean and attractive.

Qualifications

Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the state where practicing. If state permits licensure without certification, must become certified by appropriate certifying agency within 9 months of hire. Master’s Degree in Health Related Field including, Health Education, Behavioral Healthcare required. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and all certifications during duration of employment.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care. Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients, instruct / manage support staff and interact with clients / employees. A comprehensive understanding of outpatient adult medicine, patient care procedures, medical protocols, testing procedures is necessary. Possess a basic knowledge of FMLA guidelines.

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
