Position Purpose:

The Recovery Specialist is a member of the multidisciplinary team and is responsible for maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment on their assigned unit/program with an emphasis on high-quality care. Responsible for the clinical and residential environment/milieu, ensuring a safe, secure, structured environment of care and patient conformance to unit/program activities and policies. May also facilitate educational groups and assist with admission, treatment, care coordination, and discharge of patients as assigned. Responsible for transporting individuals with approved vehicles to and from appointments, meetings, or other community events/locations as assigned.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Demonstrates, promotes and integrates the mission of Sisters of Providence Health System, the program, and the core values (including H.E.A.L. Standards of Behavior) into daily work activities. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to cultural differences of patients and staff through consistent respectful interactions with all patients, their families and all levels of colleagues and leadership.

  • Maintains high standards of ethical conduct in accordance with applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations including fraud, abuse, neglect and waste. Is responsible for completing annual Corporate Compliance training as a colleague of SPHS and ensures individual conduct is in alignment with all organizational Corporate Compliance policies and procedures. Avoids activities that could result in a conflict of interest. Maintains required licenses, educational requirements, and certifications for the position.

  • Oversees environment of care/milieu, providing guidance and interventions as indicated, to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment to promote patient progress in treatment.

  • Oversees, accompanies, and guides patients throughout treatment to ensure patients are adhering to schedules, program activities, environment of care/milieu standards, and unit/program policies. Performs orientation to the unit/program, including the facility and rules, as assigned within the prescribed timeline. Adheres to and promotes all organizational standards of care, compliance, professional and regulatory requirements.

  • Effectively participates in patient care as part of the multidisciplinary treatment team. Demonstrates a working knowledge of patient treatment plan and consistently supports identified goals through providing guidance or counseling (with appropriate qualifications) to patient and communication with family, external agencies, and other members of the treatment team and organization. Ensures one's own familiarity of the patient record and all information necessary to the effective care and treatment of the patient.

  • Assists members of the multidisciplinary team with the admission, orientation, care coordination, ongoing treatment and/or discharge of patients as assigned.

  • Facilitates educational or other groups as assigned.

  • Provides crisis intervention or responds to emergency situations as appropriate within organizational guidelines and consistent with the training received.

  • Transports patients to and from appointments or other community meetings/events or discrete locations for program-related services as assigned through driving/use of an approved vehicle. Adheres to all policies regarding the safety of the patient throughout the transport.

  • Performs unit/program related duties, including but not limited to tasks such as obtaining vital signs, assisting patients with activities of daily living, laundry, and room checks, as assigned.

  • Completes documentation in an appropriate and timely manner and maintains patient records in accordance with organizational, state, and federal policies, standards, and regulations.

  • Recognizes and reports unit/program specific safety, facility, clinical, or other concerns to supervisor timely, accurately recording same.

  • Attends relevant meetings, trainings, and educational sessions as assigned in order to grow professionally, meet organizational, state, or federal regulatory requirements, and enhance the quality of treatment on the unit/program.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Work minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or other related health and human service field and at least one (1) year of experience working with patients with substance use disorders. Additional certification, including LADC-II or LADC-Assistant is preferred.

  • CPR and CPI certification required.

  • Requires an understanding of the principles of both recovery-oriented care and trauma-informed care, and how to support patients towards their treatment goals.

  • Demonstrates good verbal, social, and writing skills and be able to demonstrate the use of clinically appropriate, non-stigmatizing language.

  • Demonstrates use of sound judgment to determine appropriate action in identifying and resolving patient care related issues and/or emergencies.

  • If required to drive approved vehicles, a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle to be used. Must have an acceptable driving record as outlined in organizational policy pertaining to vehicle safety. Must show evidence of appropriate driver's insurance.

  • Requires successful completion of CORI check as outlined by organization, EOHHS, DPH, or DPH guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Department is a busy inpatient unit with a moderate volume of patients served on a daily basis and high turnover which can be of moderate or significant stress at times.

  • Requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and/or lifting up to 25 lbs. May involve some physical activity exercises if coordinating or leading recreational activities for patients. There may also be periodic eye/ear strain (less than 50% of time). Requires the ability to read and write legible handwritten notes in the patient record and basic computer skills to include but not limited to reading and typing email correspondence and/or documenting in an electronic record. Requires ability to detect motion, including but not limited to human movement, or the presence of moderate sized objects, from a distance of 100 feet (e.g. down a hallway). Periodic exposure to unpleasant conditions, including activities with patients that could cause injury, inconvenience or discomfort, and occasional exposure to hazards that would require routine precautions.

  • The nature of the work as inpatient unit staffed 24 hours daily may cause irregularity in scheduled hours due to holidays, weekend rotations, covering double shifts, overtime, and may cause occasional stress and demands on home or social life.

  • Requires some travel, including transporting patients to appointments in approved vehicles, which may present some risk that would occur with operating a motor vehicle in a suburban and/or urban environment, including use of local roads or freeways in moderate to heavy traffic.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Director, Clinical Stabilization Services.

  • Has no responsibility for the direct supervision of other employees.
