Position Purpose:

Assess the Spiritual needs of patients, family members, and hospital staff and facilitate the meeting of those needs with department staff, community clergy, spiritual counselors, and volunteers as they are in accordance with Hospital philosophy, mission statement, and objectives. Provide support, guidance, and comfort to patients and their families, hospital staff, and the community about issues related to spirituality and wholeness. Encourage team cooperation as part of our mission to make known God's providential care.

Job Description Details:

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Assess, identify, and chart clearly the spiritual and ethical issues that are relevant to the holistic care of the patient based on a consistent model and method of assessment. In addition, if possible, communicate this information with the care team members.

  • Facilitate with patient, family, or staff in individual or group work, the exploration leading toward resolution of spiritual, ethical, emotional, and psychosocial issues. Serve as an ethical resource person for patients, family and staff according to department policies and procedures.

  • Participate in patient care conferences, as needed, to ensure effective communication of patient and family needs with entire care team.

  • Be a supportive spiritual presence and act as liaison between Hospital staff and patients’ families and friends during periods of crisis such as critical illness, cardiac arrest, and death.

  • Contact patients’ pastors, as requested by patients, to inform them of hospitalization and condition of patients.

  • Develop and implement worship services and prayer activities as needed.

  • Provide, as needed, educational programs for hospital personnel and community groups, (e.g. spiritual care and wellness, spirituality and end of life care, information about advance directives, spiritual and cultural awareness, and pastoral cares relationship within the hospital.)

  • Actively participate and contribute to hospital committees that pertain to patient rights, and spiritual care.

  • Participate in department based quality improvement activities.

  • Demonstrate clinical competency and professional standards for Pastoral Care by staying current in job related skill development and continuing education and maintaining professional certification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts normally acquired through the completion of a Master’s degree in Theology or closely related field and one to two years of previous work related experience.

  • Certification required by either the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the Association of Professional Chaplains.

  • Knowledge of Catholic ethical guidelines. Ecclesiastical endorsement by approved Church authority.

  • Work requires providing direct patient care in a diverse faith community to pediatric, adolescent, young adult, adult, and geriatric patients. Excellent communication and counseling skills, along with an ecumenical orientation are necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work requires the ability to communicate orally.

  • Work requires the ability to hear.

  • The chaplain is expected to visit patients in their rooms and therefore must be able to enter and move through rooms as required and needed.
