Geriatric Psychiatric Registered Nurse – Full Time second Shift Monday ‐ Friday
Is accountable for coordinating patient care by utilizing the nursing process and current knowledge of psychiatric nursing incorporating age specific criteria. a) Demonstrates an understanding of the Department of Nursing Philosophy as integrated in the practice of the nursing process. b) Demonstrates accurate and effective assessment skills including mental status examination. c) Identifies learning needs of the patient and family taking into consideration issues over the lifespan. d) Formulates a problem list and sets priorities for nursing care. e) Involves patient and family in the plan of care.
Functions within the scope of nursing practice demonstrating competency and appropriate implementation of Whittier Pavilion policies, procedures and standards to safely provide direct care to patients and families. a) Is informed of the health status, treatments, care and progress of assigned patients. b) Implements an individualized treatment plan specific to the patient/family culture, age and developmental level. c) Integrates current knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles and standards in the delivery of care to patients/families. d) Presents information to the patient/family clearly and utilizes available audio and visual resources when appropriate.
Demonstrates effective written, verbal and non‐verbal communications skills. a) Documents appropriate information in the patient record accurately and in a timely manner. b) Demonstrates an understanding of the legal implications of documentation. c) Utilizes therapeutic communication skills, verbal and non‐verbal, with patients and families. d) Communicates appropriate patient care issues with peers, physicians, and supervisors promptly, clearly and completely. 4) Demonstrates preservation of patient rights and human dignity in accordance with Whittier Pavilion policies, procedures and Code of Ethics. a) Serves as a patient advocate. b) Always maintains patient/family privacy and confidentiality. c) Informs patients/families of treatment plans and incorporates them in decisions related to care.
Demonstrates professional accountability.
Graduate from an accredited registered nursing program required. BSN preferred.
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
One or two years of previous acute or adult/adolescent/geriatric or psychiatric experience preferred.
Knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
Knowledge of psychiatric concepts and principles.
Successful completion of Pharmacology exam.
Current BLS certification.
