This position is part of an interdisciplinary clinical treatment team to ensure effective delivery of Therapeutic Recreation services with agency/facility policies and Title XIX regulations. The Recreational Therapist 1 is assigned to a residential program located at the Hogan Regional Center. This position facilitates and oversees the therapeutic recreation and leisure services for individuals on their caseload. This position provides direct clinical services to individuals in their home and in the community. The Recreational Therapist I will develop individual therapeutic goals & objectives for individuals. The Recreation Therapist I is responsible for the evaluation of the recreation /leisure therapy needs for developmentally delayed individuals; some of whom present with potentially aggressive behaviors, acute psychiatric needs and fragile medical/ physical conditions. This position develops plans and implements programs and special events, including the requisition and management of funds within facility policy. The selected candidate will also conduct training sessions for agency personnel and individuals in such areas as types of services available and leisure options. He or she will determine activities for recreational programs; requisition supplies and equipment; enforce rules and regulations; perform related work as required. In this position the ability to meet therapeutic objectives and goals for individuals through designing and implementing individual and/or group activities or sports in accordance with their needs and ISP is essential.

The Recreational Therapist I is part of an interdisciplinary team and attends meetings, clinics and performs rounds as appropriate. He/She will work with clinicians to train direct support staff in providing appropriate leisure opportunities and monitor implementation.

In order to ensure a continuum of care, the recreational therapist coordinates programs with other disciplines to assure optimal use or resources, provides in-service training to staff and is an active participant in the interdisciplinary process. The recreational therapist communicates with outside providers, staff, families and colleagues regarding changes, progress and status.

This position requires computer skills to utilize the electronic records system, schedule flexibility and excellent communication skills.

A criminal background check (CORI) will be completed on the recommended candidate as required by the regulations set forth by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services prior to the candidate being hired. In addition, Chapter 234 of the Acts of 2014, An Act Requiring National Background Checks, requires the Department of Developmental Services to conduct fingerprint-based check of the state and national criminal history databases on the recommended candidate. Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instituting or conducting therapeutic recreation services in a recognized public or private agency, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience in the substitution below.

In compliance with Federal Title XIX regulations:

§483.430(b)(5)(viii) To be designated as a professional recreation staff member an individual must have a bachelor’s degree in recreation or in a specialty area such as art, dance, music or physical education.


I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
