Duties & Responsibilities The Molecular and Integrative Physiological Sciences Program, is a program under the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where program faculty study the biological mechanisms underlying health effects of environmental exposures. We focus on three main problems: air pollution, lung infection and asthma. Our investigations use the full palette of modern techniques, including molecular and cellular biology, animal models, and human studies.
We are seeking a Research Assistant to perform the follow duties:
Perform basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology and immunology;
Perform standard molecular biology assays, cell culture, multiplex assays;
Maintain the cell culture;
Prepare and process RNA/DNA/cell lysate and blood samples, according to the standard operating procedures;
Understand and adhere to safety and blood pathogen guidelines as outlined by supervisor;
Maintain inventory of processing supplies to meet the needs of upcoming sample needs
Performs related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment, ordering supplies and keep up to date material inventory;
Assist in the manufacture of solutions used in production and processing of raw materials;
Handle and move animals safely. Monitor the condition of animals and recognize and resolve any behavioral problems, ensure animals are kept clean and comfortable;
Receive samples at the lab and ensures that they are properly unpacked, organized and ready for processing;
Document, compile, and assist in interpreting experimental data;
Report data to supervisor in oral and written reports and give presentation at group meetings;
Construct figures for grant proposals, progress reports and manuscripts;
Assist in the lab organization and housekeeping;
Assist in the cleaning of autoclavable materials used during cell culture.
Please Note: This position has a term appointment of March 1, 2018.
Please Note: This position requires successful completion of an occupational health screening.
1+ years of related experience; a combination of experience and education may be considered.
Bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences or related field strongly preferred.
Experience in animal handling while working in a biomedical research laboratory (relevant course work may count towards experience).
Requires to work with and handle animal under supervision.
Requires general understanding of good laboratory practices.
Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications
A background in blood handling, PCR, and sterile technique is helpful but not required
May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.
May be required to lift, move and transport related laboratory equipment.
Detail orientated and quality focused mindset.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
