  • Board Certified in Adult or Child Psychiatry (or board-eligible, with expectation to be certified within two years or two consecutive board examination cycles)

  • M.D. or D.O. and licensed to practice in Massachusetts 

  • DEA license, including Massachusetts DEA 

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Documented experience working with young adult patients either in college or other University programs

  • Experience working with diverse populations

  • Experience with telemedicine

  • Strong theoretical understanding of multicultural issues in mental health

  • Demonstrated work experience in the following areas preferred: 

  • Assessment/treatment of adolescents, adults, and children; eating disorders; awareness of issues pertaining to students from other cultures; student health issues; urgent care and crisis management; outreach and consultation in a university setting; treatment of clients with trauma history; treatment of patients with gender and sexuality concerns. 

  • Substantial experience and authoritative knowledge of clinical principles and practices

  • Experience in clinical management, supervision, quality assurance, continuous improvement, utilization management, and understanding complex organizational, financial, and management issues

  • Demonstrated skills in effective communication, negotiation, leadership, and teaching

  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality, cost-effective health care and research in a large multidisciplinary prepaid group practice

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical: 

  • Psychopharmacology:  Provide psychopharmacological treatment/support for patients and prescribes psychotropic medications listed in the HUHS formulary.  

  • Facilitates the clinical management of patients through the process of evaluation, diagnosis, consultation, and referral to the appropriate resources. 

  • Identifies and monitors high-risk patients and expedites an individualized crisis management plan. 

  • Develops and maintains mechanisms to assure continuity of care for individuals in acute distress. 

  • Assists and participates in the development of treatment plans consistent with the policies and procedures of CAMHS. 

  • As needed, supervises psychiatry residents and provides training to social work and psychology interns. 

  • Works in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. 

  • Covers after hours on call as second call provider for the service, including weekends and holidays. (On average, psychiatrists are on call 2 to 3 weekdays each month, 6-7 weekends per year, and holidays are rotated among psychiatrists). 

  • Participates in multicultural initiatives, for example co-facilitating community conversations with different affinity groups. 

  • Demonstrates commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others. Promotes a sense of belonging for persons with diverse backgrounds. 

    Administrative: 

  • Coordinates outpatient visits to ensure timely access to appropriate services. 

  • Maintains confidentiality and documents all patient contacts accurately and in a timely manner. 

  • Responds to secure messages that are initiated by patients and other providers within HUHS. 

    Community Outreach: 

  • As requested, provides education and outreach to the community both in Harvard College and within the larger University. 

    Compliance:

  • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of the department.

  • Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the department.

  • Completes and complies with HUHS training requirements including HIPAA Privacy and Security.

  • Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.

Working Conditions:

Job Summary:

Situated within Harvard University Health Services (HUHS), Harvard’s Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS) is a counseling and mental health support service which seeks to work collaboratively with students and the university to support individuals who are experiencing some measure of distress in their lives.  Harvard’s undergraduate and graduate/professional students come from diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, national origins, sexual orientations, gender identities, and lived experiences. 

This position opportunity for a Psychiatrist at CAMHS encompasses the following expectations: 

Provides diagnostic and psychiatric assessments and out-patient psychotherapy/psychopharmacology for patients with mental health issues (individual and crisis intervention).  Provides outreach and consultation with University administrators.  As needed, supervises and trains psychiatric residents and psychiatric nurse practitioners.  Provides training and consultation to the social workers and psychologists on staff as a member of a team within CAMHS.  Covers after hours on call as second call provider for the service, including weekends and holidays. (On average, psychiatrists are on call 2 to 3 weekdays each month, 6-7 weekends per year, and holidays are rotated among psychiatrists).  Serves on HUHS/CAMHS committees at the request of the Chief of CAMHS.
