The positions in this job family will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity. In general, they will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results.
- We seek an enthusiastic, responsible and highly capable laboratory technician, with a BA/BS in biology or a related field, and with two or more years of laboratory experience in molecular and cellular biology or biochemistry (ideally with some laboratory management experience), to join a cancer genomics research team that studies the molecular mechanisms of oncogenes in cancers, infection-associated cancers, and the interaction of the immune system with cancer. This individual will work with post-doctoral fellows using cutting-edge molecular biology and genomic techniques. The environment is highly collaborative, stimulating, and multi-disciplinary, and will provide a rich environment in which to advance skills in basic cancer biology, cancer genomics, and laboratory management and operations.
The job will be split between laboratory management and research duties. Specific duties would include:
1) Laboratory management and operations:
Maintaining stocks and inventories of laboratory supplies
Ordering laboratory supplies and reagents
Interfacing with vendors for purchases of equipment and reagents
Cataloging and organizing laboratory reagents
Managing equipment maintenance and repair
Other duties as appropriate
Tissue culture of human cancer cells
DNA cloning and sequencing
Design and use of reagents for genome engineering with CRISPR/Cas9 technology
Extraction and analysis of DNA and RNA, including PCR, quantitative PCR, RT-PCR, and sequencing
Protein assays including immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting.
Presenting findings at internal (DFCI) meetings
Contributing to the development and execution of experiments and data analysis, in collaboration with the team.
Bachelor's degree required with a minimum of 2 years post degree research experience or a Master's degree.
We are seeking an exceptionally motivated scientist, who, in addition to appropriate technical and scientific knowledge, will have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, a working knowledge of basic laboratory research software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint), the ability to perform meticulous record keeping, be comfortable interacting with a diverse, energetic and collegial group of scientists, and enjoy managing as well as contributing to the laboratory’s research programs.
We are looking for someone with experience with basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, e.g. DNA & RNA isolation, cloning, plasmid preparation, Western blotting, tissue culture, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc. In addition, knowledge of microbiological techniques e.g. bacterial isolation and culture, or advanced experimental techniques e.g. next-generation sequencing, FACS, ChIP-seq would be highly desirable and welcomed, as would be experience with mouse models of cancer.
