  • GENERAL SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and is responsible for assisting with the design, implementation, and evaluation of various research projects. In addition, this position requires preparation of fresh human tissue and blood specimens for frozen storage for subsequent research and diagnostic use as well as maintenance of the computerized database for the frozen tissue archive.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Performs a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules. Suggests modifications to protocols based upon experience.

Maintains detailed records of results and methodology. May present findings at lab meetings.

Processes fresh human cardiovascular tissue from surgical pathology specimens for cryopreservation.

Separates buffy coat cells from whole blood samples by density-gradient centrifugation; wash and cryopreserve mononuclear cell samples.

Prepares plasma/serum samples for cryopreservation.

Conducts nucleic acid extraction and storage from tissue and cell samples.

Transfers samples to freezers for long-term storage.

Retrieves samples from freezers and prepares them for distribution.

Maintains freezers including documentation of temperature and service records.

Catalogues all samples stored in using a dedicated computerized database

Abstracts diagnostic data for frozen samples and enter the information into the computerized database

Works with information system analysts to develop a networked frozen tissue database

Uses appropriate safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, infectious, radioactive and toxic substances. Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with such procedures.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of Medical Terminology

Ability to perform data entry and retrieval

Knowledge of database management helpful

Ability to prioritize quickly and appropriately essential.

Knowledge of the biological sciences, scientific principles, biological structure and lab techniques.

Bachelor's degree (e.g., in biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, or other bioscience program)

2-5 years experience in research related activities
