State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse IV in Boston, Massachusetts
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is looking for an experienced and committed Registered Nurse IV .
The Registered Nurse IV Evening/Night Supervisor provides direct and indirect supervision to the management and care of patients from the community, DPH, DOC, DMH and DDS on all units during evening and/or night shifts by reviewing and evaluating patient assessments, nursing care plans and documentation, utilizing information obtained by direct observation during rounds, verbal and written reports and conferences with nursing, multidisciplinary and interdepartmental personnel to maintain 24 hour continuity of care.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
Assists in ensuring staff's attendance whenever educational programs are scheduled during evening and night whenever possible.
Assumes responsibility for containing overtime costs whenever possible within the financial constraints of the nursing department budget.
Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development through conferences, seminars and workshops.
Supervises related duties by directing follow-through on repair of equipment, systematic return of equipment to designated locations, namely CSR, checking safety conditions and appropriate utilization and applications of restraints, checking apparatus for cleanliness, overseeing stocking of medical supplies and nursing stations, checking emergency equipment, outdated drugs and code carts, investigating patient and employee complaints.
Oversees and assists with the IV/Phlebotomy activities in the off shift.
Assures continuity of care amongst all care givers by following both the hospital and Department of Nursing Hand Off Communication policies.
Assures staffing is appropriate to the census as well as acuity on all units.
Functions as the hospital administrator on off shift by carrying out the duties relevant to an administrator until appropriate senior manager is contacted. This will also include convening command center in event of a disaster.
LSH takes pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The Hospital serves populations that are mostly indigent, often in the care and custody of state agencies, and present with clinical issues that arise from mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse. LSH provides 260 inpatient beds and 25 specialty medical clinics, including surgical services, to patients and clients referred by private sector providers and state agencies (including the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDS), and the Department of Corrections (DOC)). We strive continuously to improve the quality of life for our patients through the delivery of collaborative treatment and a patient-focused continuum of care. Teaching professionals from various health disciplines always have been a part of the hospital’s charge as well.
Hours to be worked: 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Days Off: Every other weekend
This position is full-time. 40 hours per week.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.**
*Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
