Lemuel Shattuck Hospital – Inpatient Psychiatrist

Metro Boston Mental Health Units (MBMHU), the inpatient psychiatric service of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, an urban public health general teaching hospital, seeks a highly skilled Inpatient Psychiatrist to join an expert collegial group of colleagues treating complex, intermediate care patients. The position is a unionized, state block offering the potential of a pension. The position does not require any night or weekend call. Night or weekend coverage is available, completely voluntary and subject to additional compensation. Teaching and mentoring opportunities and academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine is potentially available.

Organizational Role and Summary of Duties:

The Inpatient Psychiatrist is the leader of the multidisciplinary treatment team and provides direct, comprehensive, quality psychiatric treatment to adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses. The psychiatrist we are seeking will join an outstanding, collegial, experienced group of board certified psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists as well as other medical practitioners of all specialties as a member of the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Medical Staff. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and formulations, the formulation and development of multidisciplinary treatment plans, comprehensive psychopharmacologic assessments and treatments. The Inpatient Psychiatrist also may assume responsibility for the teaching and training of medical students, psychiatry residents, and other trainees, as well as other duties as outlined in the specific job description.

Hours to be worked: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Expertise and interest in particular subspecialty areas: inpatient care of patients with serious mental illness, inpatient care of patients with forensic involvement, and inpatient care at an intermediate care facility (or equivalent).

  2. Demonstrated capacity to work cooperatively with other clinicians.

LSH takes pride in helping people recover from illnesses and conditions that are often underserved or difficult to manage in other health care settings. The Hospital serves populations that are mostly indigent, often in the care and custody of state agencies, and present with clinical issues that arise from mental illness, homelessness, and substance abuse. LSH provides 260 inpatient beds and 25 specialty medical clinics, including surgical services, to patients and clients referred by private sector providers and state agencies (including the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDS), and the Department of Corrections (DOC)). We strive continuously to improve the quality of life for our patients through the delivery of collaborative treatment and a patient-focused continuum of care. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least three years of residency training in a recognized program in psychiatry AND at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in the field of psychiatry.

Special Requirements: Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
